Oldham Athletic Reserves | 0-3 | Manchester United Reserves |

It would be fair to say United’s defence of the Manchester Senior Cup hasn’t been unduly challenging so far. Resounding 5-0 victors in the opening round-robin match against Bury, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side made it two from two at Hyde United’s Ewen Fields ground tonight with a comfortable 3-0 win over a game but ultimately outclassed Oldham Athletic.
The result was never in doubt once the Reds netted twice in as many minutes midway through the first half through Febian Brandy and Sam Hewson, and substitute Joshua King added some gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time at the end of the game with a fine goal on the counter attack. Further plus points for those of a United persuasion came in the form of the comebacks from injury of Rafael da Silva and summer signing Gabriel Obertan, who made his first appearance in the red shirt.

United 5 Bury 0: Shakers shaken as Reds fire five

Stewart 36 | – | – |
Moffatt 70 | – | – |
United made an emphatic start to their bid to win the Manchester Senior Cup for a third consecutive year this evening, Bury the unfortunate side on the receiving end of a five-star showing from Ole Solskjaer’s Reserves at Moss Lane.
Sam Hewson picked up where he left off against Bolton on Monday night and handed the Reds a fifth-minute lead. Bury’s backline could have been forgiven at that point for thinking they were in for a long night, and so it proved as Kiko Macheda (twice), Cameron Stewart and Scott Moffatt all found the net and established a scoreline that barely reflected United’s dominance over the ninety minutes.

Bolton 1 United 3: Reserves start season in style as Bolton are beaten again

Bolton Wanderers Reserves | 1-3 | Manchester United Reserves |
O’Halloran 10 | – | Cathcart 3 |

United’s reserves got their Barclays Premier Reserve League North campaign off to winning start this evening with an ultimately convincing 3-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers. Returning to the County Ground in Leyland, scene of last week’s Lancashire Senior Cup Final triumph against the same opposition, a much more open and exciting match than that encounter saw the Reds seize control of the game in the second half after a much more even first 45 minutes that had seen Craig Cathcart and Wanderers’ Michael O’Halloran trade early goals and Zoran Tošić hand Ole Solskjaer’s side a slightly fortuitous lead on the stroke of half-time.
The second half turned into something of a duel between a much more dominant United and Robert Lainton in the Bolton goal, with numerous opportunities to kill off the match going begging before Sam Hewson finally secured all three points and an opening day win with a late header.

Norwich 1 United 1: de Laet show earns depleted Reds a deserved draw

Norwich City | 1-1 | Manchester United XI |
Adeyemi 21 | – | de Laet 85 |
– | – | Hewson missed pen 35 |
A Ritchie de Laet equaliser five minutes from time handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side a deserved share of the spoils at Carrow Road this afternoon, as a somewhat makeshift United XI bounced back from an early Norwich goal and a first-half penalty miss to outplay their League One opposition in the second forty-five minutes.
Canaries midfielder Tom Adeyemi gave the home side just reward for an impressive first twenty minutes with a great strike from outside the area, and debutant goalkeeper Ben Alnwick – a loan signing from Tottenham – gave Bryan Gunn’s team another boost when he plunged to his left to turn away Sam Hewson’s spot-kick ten minutes before the break. The Reds adjusted better to the inevitable second-half changes however, and went close on a number of occasions before the unlikely figure of de Laet got in behind the City backline to slot home a late leveller.

AFC Fylde 1 United 2: Reserves get pre-season underway with a win

AFC Fylde | 1-2 | Manchester United XI |
Clark 83 | – | Cleverley 39 |

A rain-lashed Kellamergh Park was the setting this evening as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side made their 2009/2010 bow against Unibond League Division One side AFC Fylde, United eventually overcoming both the conditions and committed opposition to get their campaign underway with a 2-1 win. Goals from midfielders Tom Cleverley and Sam Hewson either side of half-time were enough to hand the Reds a victory that their dominant performance deserved, although the home side sent the majority of the record crowd home happy after grabbing a late consolation through Michael Clark.
