Marnick Vermijl marked his Reds debut with a well-taken brace as United comfortably overcame a shadow Shamrock Rovers side 3-0 in the first game of the Platinum One Challenge.
Rovers keeper Pat Jennings performed a passable impression of his illustrious goalkeeping namesake in the first-half, denying United on a number of occasions, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side – bolstered by a number of players with senior experience – weren’t to be denied after the break as a penalty from Tom Cleverley and Vermijl’s double secured a deservedly comprehensive win.
