United’s reserves continued their hectic pre-season programme with a creditable – if somewhat dour – 1-1 draw against League One Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.
The hosts took an early lead through Mark McChrystal but Jesse Lingard’s strike brought the Reds level before half-time. With Warren Joyce’s side playing their third game in four days, fatigue was an obvious factor as an uneventful second 45 largely passed both teams by and the game drifted towards an always-inevitable draw.

Oliver Norwood capped off a worthwhile visit to Scotland for United’s Reserves with a sublime curling effort to beat a competitive Ayr United side 1-0 at Somerset Park.
After beating Spartans 7-1 twenty-four hours earlier, there where high hopes for more goals from a United side that contained experienced first team players Darron Gibson and Tomasz Kuszczak. However, Norwood’s goal on 54 minutes was all that separated the two sides.

Boxing Day football is one the great traditions of the English game but with the continued wintry weather rendering this year’s slate of fixtures something of a damp (or icy) squib, only three of United’s loanees had the chance to run off the turkey and trimmings this weekend…

Two terrific goals from Portuguese winger Bébé helped United’s second string extend their unbeaten run to six games, the Reds running out comfortable 3-1 winners over Wigan Athletic at Moss Lane.
The summer signing from Vitória Guimarães struck early on with a fierce effort into the top corner before producing an even better goal just before the hour mark, his stunning angled volley arrowing and dipping past a helpless Lee Nicholls in the Latics goal. In between Will Keane had stroked home a penalty on the brink of half-time, all of which rendered Ivan Sunday’s header with twenty-five minutes remaining no more than a consolation.

United’s second string returned from a month without a game to record their first league win of the season, coming back from a goal down to beat Bolton in terrible conditions at the County Ground.
An experienced Trotters XI featuring a number of first team squad members took the lead through Adam Blakeman just after the half-hour mark, but Will Keane provided an almost instant response for the Reds before second-half strikes from Cameron Stewart and Tom Thorpe secured all three points for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

International break it may be, but with eight United youngsters on loan in Leagues One and Two, there’s still something for Reds to keep an eye on at club level over the next fortnight – last night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy action for starters, which saw involvement for five of our loanees on what turned out to be quite a dramatic evening.

It’s been another impressive month for United’s youngsters across all levels, leaving us with a tough decision when picking September’s star man. While a couple of players have made compelling cases with their goalscoring exploits, we’ve gone for a man who’s predominantly a creator – the reserves’ captain and playmaking midfield maestro Magnus Eikrem.

As far as senior debuts go, scoring late on to earn your side a point against the league leaders isn’t too shabby – especially if you’re a defender. Step forward Scott Wootton…
