A Ritchie de Laet equaliser five minutes from time handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side a deserved share of the spoils at Carrow Road this afternoon, as a somewhat makeshift United XI bounced back from an early Norwich goal and a first-half penalty miss to outplay their League One opposition in the second forty-five minutes.

Canaries midfielder Tom Adeyemi gave the home side just reward for an impressive first twenty minutes with a great strike from outside the area, and debutant goalkeeper Ben Alnwick – a loan signing from Tottenham – gave Bryan Gunn’s team another boost when he plunged to his left to turn away Sam Hewson’s spot-kick ten minutes before the break. The Reds adjusted better to the inevitable second-half changes however, and went close on a number of occasions before the unlikely figure of de Laet got in behind the City backline to slot home a late leveller.

Did Danny Simpson actually play as an 11?! He’s so not staying after this summer, is he, only filling in where needed…

Trying to suss out who played where is baffling. I assume the back four was (r-l) Gray, Chester, Cathcart, de Laet in the first half with Simpson in midfield, but then when Gill came on for Chester he apparently went to right-back, so I assume de Laet moved inside to partner Cathcart and either Simpson or Gray moved to left-back (until Dudgeon came on I guess). Stewart was definitely upfront on his own all game. Hopefully will hear from someone who watched it sooner or later…

My reports tell me that the subs were 12. Dudgeon, 13 Zieler, 14. Gill, 15. Norwood, 16. Moffatt, 17. Ajose, 18. Wootton

Apparently my contacts tell me that it was definitely Wootton who came on for Gill.

They aren’t sure who was 16 or 17 as they didn’t come on but reckoned it was either Ajose and Moffatt.

We started 451 with Stewart up front, with five in the middle but no-one really playing wide.

After half time Gill went to left back and Simpson to right back, De Laet into the middle with Gray pushed into midfield.

When Dudgeon came on he played wide left, and De Laet was pushed up front and Evans dropped in front of the back three (Simpson, Cathcart, Gill) with the others all in midfield.
