Youth Cup: United 2 Birmingham 0 – Reds edge past battling Blues

Posted by nickogs20 on December 11, 2009

December 10th 2009, 7pm
Moss Lane, Altrincham

Man Utd Birmingham
Manchester United U18s 2-0 Birmingham City U18s
Pogba 1
Ajose 30

It wasn’t particularly convincing, it certainly wasn’t all that pretty but ultimately, a hard-fought 2-0 win over Birmingham City was enough to send United’s academy side through to Round Four of this year’s FA Youth Cup.

Things couldn’t have started better for Paul McGuinness’ side, who were ahead before the clock had even reached the sixty-second mark thanks to some slack marking from the visitors and a smart header from Paul Pogba. United struggled to build on that early advantage however and the Blues gave as good as they got, maybe even having the better of the first-half and likely feeling more than a little unfortunate to go in two behind at the break after Nicky Ajose doubled the Reds’ lead on the half-hour mark.

With Birmingham still very much in the game, a pivotal moment came eight minutes into the second half as the Blues were awarded something of a soft penalty, only for striker Jake Jervis to see his penalty brilliantly saved by Conor Devlin. A goal there and it could have been a very different game but that miss seemed to drain the visitors’ belief, and the Reds saw out the rest of a tricky tie in relative comfort to ensure their name would be in the hat for tomorrow’s fourth round draw.

With the Reds’ Youth Cup third round tie with Birmingham City just a fortnight away, the pool of available players for Paul McGuinness to choose from for that match seems to be dwindling by the day.

Another late comeback sees reserves share six goals in St. Andrews thriller

Jerome 37, 56 Gray 70
Brandão 85

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side added to their reputation as comeback kings with another late turnaround at St. Andrews in their final warm-up game, goals from David Gray and Evandro Brandão hauling the Reds level at 3-3 and ensuring an unbeaten pre-season campaign after a brace from Cameron Jerome had fired Birmingham City into a 3-1 lead. Rodrigo Possebon had earlier cancelled out Gary McSheffrey’s opener with a fine strike from the edge of the box.

McLeish plotting Old Trafford loan raid

Posted by nickogs20 on June 18, 2008

Alex McLeishBirmingham City boss Alex McLeish is facing up to a season in the Championship, and one of his first ports of call when looking for the players to get his side back into the top flight looks set to be his managerial mentor Sir Alex Ferguson. McLeish was a key player in Fergie’s successful Aberdeen side in the early 80’s and has hinted he’ll be looking to acquire some of his former boss’ most promising youngsters on a temporary basis to aid Birmingham’s promotion bid.

The former Rangers and Scotland manager told Sky Sports “I talk with Sir Alex now and again, including about the possibility of loan players when the time comes. The loan system is there and, with it being there, you’ve got to use it.”

Birmingham have taken a number of youngsters on loan from Arsenal in recent seasons, but it seems their attention may now be turning the Champions’ way. So which players are likely to crop up in conversation between the two Alex’s as potential loanees? I’m far from an expert on Birmingham’s player needs but defence and midfield look like the areas most in need of strengthening. Craig Cathcart’s disrupted campaign last year might make him a bit too much of a risk for a promotion-seeking Championship club but he’s a long shot, as fellow defenders James Chester and Richard Eckersley would be. Danny Simpson would probably be the most likely defensive candidate, but that would depend on our own transfer activity this summer.

It’s in the middle of the park where United probably have more players that would interest McLeish. Darron Gibson and Lee Martin are coming off Championship loan spells where they’ve shown promise but are still yet to fully prove themselves – this might be the opportunity. Chris Eagles comes into the equation for similar reasons. Don’t rule out someone like Sam Hewson or maybe even Rodrigo Possebon either – both are at that level where reserve football probably isn’t enough of a challenge any longer.
