United’s reserves got their Barclays Premier Reserve League North campaign off to winning start this evening with an ultimately convincing 3-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers. Returning to the County Ground in Leyland, scene of last week’s Lancashire Senior Cup Final triumph against the same opposition, a much more open and exciting match than that encounter saw the Reds seize control of the game in the second half after a much more even first 45 minutes that had seen Craig Cathcart and Wanderers’ Michael O’Halloran trade early goals and Zoran Tošić hand Ole Solskjaer’s side a slightly fortuitous lead on the stroke of half-time.

The second half turned into something of a duel between a much more dominant United and Robert Lainton in the Bolton goal, with numerous opportunities to kill off the match going begging before Sam Hewson finally secured all three points and an opening day win with a late header.

Last week’s LSC clash had seen an experience-laden Trotters side narrowly beaten by a much younger Reds XI, but the league meeting brought something of a role reversal. Bolton fielded a completely different starting lineup with much more of a youthful look to it, while United mixed in a bit more of a first-team flavour in the form of Wes Brown and Darron Gibson, both looking for vital match practice. At the other end of the experience scale, Solskjaer handed a first reserves start to his compatriot Joshua King, the 17 year-old having really impressed throughout pre-season for both the second string and the academy.

I echo your sentiments about Josh King, hopefully a star in the making.

At the game last night…… even the Bolton fans were impressed.

Just looked at the united website and the academy page has been updated to include the new intake of players. However i was wondering why in the squad list there is no Ngoo, McGinty, Massacci or Fornasier? Is that because they are recently signed? Hope you know some more about this NickOGS

Petrucci has a hip problem and told someone he would be back in 6 weeks. That was about two weeks ago, so he should be back late September. He’s definitely still at the club.

United never put a complete list of their youngsters – for obvious reasons, such as protecting their identity etc – and just tend to put a short list of there most well known or often the local youngsters. We’ve definately signed McGinty & Pogba, and as far as i know have signed Massacci. Not sure about Fornasier, i think they could still be having talks and I think he’s still in Italy. Btw Nick did you know Johnny Gorman has left and moved to Wolves? Also – has Antonio Bryan definately been released?

I don’t think it’s coincidence that the 12 players promoted from the U16s have been added to the academy squad list on the official site and the new signings haven’t – I’m sure they’ll be added in due course. Obviously McGinty’s here as we’ve seen him play, Pogba and Massacci have both been seen at games in United tracksuits so it’s safe to assume they’re signed too.

Max – I’d heard Gorman had left but hadn’t heard about joining Wolves, good move for him.

Not sure about Anton Bryan, seems to still be listed on the site after they’ve updated it, but hasn’t been involved since the first reserve pre-season game and has definitely been on trial at a few clubs (Bristol City for one), so I assume that’s just an error.

Oh yeah, it is the promoted players! Good call.. The United site is a pretty useless tool to go by – they still have Galbraith listed and he’s definately moved onto Hibernian. As well as Derbyshire who moved over a month ago. Cheers for the info. Good win tonight too.. Look forward to the report
