United 5 Bury 0: Shakers shaken as Reds fire five

Man Utd Bury
Manchester United Reserves 5-0 Bury Reserves
Hewson 5
Macheda 31 (pen), 50
Stewart 36
Moffatt 70

United made an emphatic start to their bid to win the Manchester Senior Cup for a third consecutive year this evening, Bury the unfortunate side on the receiving end of a five-star showing from Ole Solskjaer’s Reserves at Moss Lane.

Sam Hewson picked up where he left off against Bolton on Monday night and handed the Reds a fifth-minute lead. Bury’s backline could have been forgiven at that point for thinking they were in for a long night, and so it proved as Kiko Macheda (twice), Cameron Stewart and Scott Moffatt all found the net and established a scoreline that barely reflected United’s dominance over the ninety minutes.

Posted by nickogs20 on July 3, 2009

In what appears to be becoming an annual event, United have seemingly secured the services of another promising Italian youngster – this time 16 year-old defender Alberto Massacci from Empoli.

Poll Reminder

Posted by nickogs20 on June 3, 2009

Just a quick nudge to anyone who hasn’t voted in either of our ongoing polls, as we seek your views ahead of United Youth’s end of season awards. We covered the Academy Player of the Year poll in an article last week, and loads of you have voted – we’ll be taking that one down in the course of the next day or so, so anyone who hasn’t should do so pronto. In addition, we’ve also got a poll running over in the right-hand sidebar for the Reserve Player of the Year – same drill, we want to know who you think has been the outstanding performer for Ole Solskjaer’s reserve side in 2008/09, and to help, we’ve listed 7 who we think are deserving of your attentions:

James Chester
The official Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year this season, James captained the side in the first half of the campaign and had a productive loan spell at Peterborough before injury cut short his season.

Tom Cleverley
A nominee for the Denzil Haroun award, Tom started the season in terrific goalscoring form for the Reds before translating that into an impressive loan spell at League One champions Leicester City.

Corry Evans
Captain after Chester’s loan departure, the 18 year-old Ulsterman was a rock at the heart of defence despite being a midfielder by trade, and has forced his way into the full Northern Ireland squad.

Fábio da Silva
Injury and the presence of Patrice Evra has prevented Fábio from making the same impact at first team level as his twin, but anyone who’s seen him for the reserves this season will know he’s capable.

Kiko Macheda
Top-scorer with 10 goals in 18 games, including a sensational hattrick against Newcastle at St James’ Park. We all know what happened in the ensuing fortnight…

Lee Martin
Returned from a disappointing loan spell at Forest with his tail between his legs back in January but has been a revelation for the second string since then in an unfamiliar central role.

Rodrigo Possebon
The Brazilian-turned-Italian’s pre/early-season form under OGS saw him force his way into the first-team picture, although his much-publicised injury against Boro in the Carling Cup set him back significantly.

You don’t have to vote for one of those if someone else has caught your eye however – the ‘Other’ box is there for you to identify another player, as some have done already with the likes of Matt James and Danny Welbeck. We’ll keep this poll running for another couple of days, and we should have another one up alongside it very soon – the all-important Overall Young Player of the Year award, where those who have caught the eye in academy and reserve action will battle it out with first-team starlets like Jonny Evans and Rafael da Silva for recognition as the most impressive young player at the club this past season.

Thanks to all those who have voted so far.

Time to have your say…

Posted by nickogs20 on May 28, 2009

So that’s it… 2008/09 is in the history books. A great season for the reserve and academy sides at United, and indeed for young players at the club in general, with many making the step up to the first team and playing their part in another successful campaign. Over the next few weeks we’ll be reviewing the season here at United Youth in a number of ways and dishing out the inevitable awards, and on that latter point, we want your input.

On the sidebar to the right, you’ll notice a poll where you can vote for your academy player of the season, so… er, please do! Bear in mind that this award is for achievement and contributions with the Under-18 side, so while, say, Danny Welbeck has been academy eligible, almost all of his good work this season has been with the reserves or the first team, so he probably wouldn’t come into contention. You can still vote for him of course – we have picked out seven standout performers, but the ‘Other’ option is there for you to vote for anyone you like.

A quick word or two on our seven standouts:

Nicky Ajose
Top scorer for the U18s with 10 goals in just 17 starts.

Joe Dudgeon
Mr Consistency at left-back all year.

Matty James
Fantastic first half of the campaign saw him pick up six goals before being promoted to the reserves full-time.

Kiko Macheda
Made a major name for himself with his first-team exploits, but also found the net 8 times in 13 starts for the academy in the first half of the season.

Oliver Norwood
Played in 28 of a possible 29 games and scored nine goals from midfield. Inherited the captain’s armband from James.

Davide Petrucci
An extremely promising first season at the club, with 5 goals in 13 starts before injury cut his campaign short.

Scott Wootton
Only missed two games all season, a key part of one of the stingiest defences in academy football.

We’ll give you a few days to vote before running the next of the handful of polls we have lined up, and the results will be revealed along with our own awards in a few weeks time.

On a general note, thanks to everyone for reading the site all season, for contributing comments and for providing info, it’s all greatly appreciated and makes the effort worthwhile. As ever, any feedback, suggestions or comments are welcomed, be they about things you want to see covered or things we’ve covered already.

Obviously the close season gives everyone a chance to take a breather, and updates will naturally be more sporadic, but we’ll be continuing to cover everything relevant, from transfers to friendly announcements to international commitments, so keep checking back and you’ll not miss a thing. Summer means holidays, so there will be periods where we can’t update for a few days at a time, so please bear with us – we’ll endeavour to catch up with anything and everything that occurs while we’re away.

Awards Night

Posted by nickogs20 on May 17, 2009

With everyone associated with Manchester United still buzzing after yesterday’s title celebrations, attention tonight turns towards recognising and rewarding those responsible for that terrific achievement and everything the club has accomplished (thus far…) this season. Much of the focus will naturally be on who will win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Award, as well as the Players’ Player and Goal of the Season awards, but of particular interest to contributors and readers of this site will of course be the Reserve Player and Young Player winners.

Kiko Macheda – Instant Stretford End hero

Posted by nickogs20 on April 5, 2009

12 months ago to the day, Federico Macheda was scoring the opener in a 1-1 draw for United’s Under-18s in the illustrious surroundings of Sheffield United’s Shirecliffe academy complex. A year on, in front of over 75,000 fans at Old Trafford, the 17 year-old Roman has just lived every Red’s dream.

Blackburn 2 United 1: Experience tells as reserves suffer defeat

United returned to Premier Reserve League action after the winter break with a trip to a chilly Christie Park in Morecambe, but came up just short against an experienced Blackburn Rovers side for whom forward Carlos Villanueva was in inspired form. The Chile international bagged a quickfire double just before the hour mark, and while the Reds responded with a Febian Brandy goal that was beautifully crafted by Davide Petrucci, the home side held on to take all three points.

United 0 City 2: Defensive lapses cost Reds dear once more

Posted by nickogs20 on December 6, 2008

Man Utd Man City
Manchester United U18s 0-2 Manchester City U18s
Ibrahim 35
Mak 39

United’s Academy side came into this morning’s derby match with their table-topping neighbours looking to bounce back from last week’s demoralising Youth Cup exit at the hands of Chelsea, but there was an unshakeable sense of deja vu at Carrington as the Reds shaded the first half only to switch off at the back and allow the Blues to score two quick goals before the interval. Goals from Abdisalam Ibrahim and Robbie Mak in the space of four minutes once again left the Reds with a mountain the climb and, despite dominating possession and having a perfectly good Ryan Tunnicliffe goal ruled out for offside, United couldn’t break down their visitors. In a game that progressively got more and more niggly, Paul McGuinness’ side were somewhat lucky to finish the game with a full compliment of players after Kiko Macheda somehow escaped a red card for an apparent headbutt.
