United’s reserves got their Barclays Premier Reserve League North campaign off to winning start this evening with an ultimately convincing 3-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers. Returning to the County Ground in Leyland, scene of last week’s Lancashire Senior Cup Final triumph against the same opposition, a much more open and exciting match than that encounter saw the Reds seize control of the game in the second half after a much more even first 45 minutes that had seen Craig Cathcart and Wanderers’ Michael O’Halloran trade early goals and Zoran Tošić hand Ole Solskjaer’s side a slightly fortuitous lead on the stroke of half-time.

The second half turned into something of a duel between a much more dominant United and Robert Lainton in the Bolton goal, with numerous opportunities to kill off the match going begging before Sam Hewson finally secured all three points and an opening day win with a late header.

United’s reserves have retained the Lancashire Senior Cup after Kiko Macheda’s winner four minutes from time settled a tense, closely-contested final at the County Ground in Leyland this evening.

With the game seemingly destined for penalties, the Reds’ Italian striker soared to meet Magnus Eikrem’s right-wing freekick and crash a great header against the crossbar before reacting quickest to nod home the rebound in predatory fashion, clinching an 11th LSC triumph in the club’s history.
