United’s reserves made it two wins from two in this year’s Manchester Senior Cup with a hard-fought win over Oldham Athletic.

While the performance left something to be desired, there was lots to be pleased about in the form of fine goals from Nicky Ajose and Federico Macheda, yet another comeback victory and important stepping stones on the road back to full fitness for Anderson, Wes Brown and, most notably, Rio Ferdinand, who completed 45 minutes on his comeback from the knee injury that ruled him out of the World Cup.

Oldham 0 United 3: Obertan makes Reds debut in MSC stroll

It would be fair to say United’s defence of the Manchester Senior Cup hasn’t been unduly challenging so far. Resounding 5-0 victors in the opening round-robin match against Bury, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side made it two from two at Hyde United’s Ewen Fields ground tonight with a comfortable 3-0 win over a game but ultimately outclassed Oldham Athletic.

The result was never in doubt once the Reds netted twice in as many minutes midway through the first half through Febian Brandy and Sam Hewson, and substitute Joshua King added some gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time at the end of the game with a fine goal on the counter attack. Further plus points for those of a United persuasion came in the form of the comebacks from injury of Rafael da Silva and summer signing Gabriel Obertan, who made his first appearance in the red shirt.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side put themselves in prime position to qualify for another Manchester Senior Cup Final with a hard-fought win against Oldham’s second string at a rain-lashed Marstons Arena this evening. Goals from Matty James and Sam Hewson, the latter an absolute screamer, earned the Reds all three points after the visitors had briefly threatened a shock by taking the lead in the first five minutes.

News roundup – Winning start for Zieler; Trio turn pro; Burnley keen on Eagles; Mixed fortune for four seeking new clubs

Posted by nickogs20 on July 15, 2008

Few snippets of news from the past few days that you may (or indeed may not) have missed…

~ United’s sole representative at the U19 Euros got off to a winning start in Plzen this evening as Ron-Robert Zieler’s Germany side overcame the holders and favourites Spain 2-1 in their opening group match. Zieler was preferred to Energie Cottbus’ Tom Mickel in goal and had little to do as Spain laboured in attack. In contrast, the young Germans built a deserved 2-0 lead with goals early in each half from Richard Sukuta-Pasu and Ömer Toprak, and had enough in the tank to comfortably hold on even after Zieler was beaten by a Jordi Alba strike midway through the second period.

Germany’s shock win will have raised hopes of success in a tournament they have never won, and their next game is on Thursday evening against Bulgaria. News on that (and more specifically RRZ’s involvement) in due course.

Club confirm the release of seven

Posted by nickogs20 on June 27, 2008

United have this afternoon confirmed what we pretty much knew already – a septet of youngsters will be released when their contracts expire on Monday. Although the identity of these players have been known for a while, for the record they are defenders Michael Lea and Kieran Lee, midfielders Ritchie Jones and Conor McCormack, wingers Séan Evans and Michael Barnes, and forward Chris Fagan.

It has been known since early 2008 that Lea, Evans, Barnes and Fagan wouldn’t be offered new contracts this summer, and the quartet have spent a lot of time since then on trial at other clubs. Jones’ contract was also known to be expiring and it was anticipated he would move on, although this hadn’t been confirmed. News of McCormack’s release came in April (initially via United.no) and was confirmed by the player himself in interviews around the time of the Champions League Final, while Kieran Lee’s free transfer to Oldham Athletic – perhaps the biggest surprise of the seven – was announced at around the same time.

Best of luck to all seven in their future careers.

Kieran Lee signs for Oldham

Posted by nickogs20 on May 21, 2008

Oldham Athletic have signed Kieran Lee on a free transfer. The versatile former reserves skipper has spent the last four months on loan with Championship side Queens Park Rangers but struggled to make an impact in limited playing time. Lee returned to Manchester when the Championship season finished and United were immediately approached by Oldham with a view to taking him to Boundary Park. That move has been finalised today and the Stalybridge-born 19 year old, equally comfortably at full-back or anywhere across the midfield, has penned a two-year contract with the Latics.

MSC: Oldham Athletic Reserves 0 United Reserves 2

Posted by nickogs20 on April 22, 2008

United made it five from five in this season’s MSC group stage at Boundary Park, but were made to work for their win by a stubborn Oldham side who were only finally killed off by a late Ritchie Jones penalty. Chris Eagles had given United the lead on 34 minutes and the Reds spurned a number of chances to finish the game off before Tom Cleverley was felled in the Latics’ area in injury time and Jones duly converted.

UNITED

Amos
Gray – Chester – Cathcart – Cleverley
Eagles – Jones – Possebon – Hewson – S. Evans
Welbeck

Subs: Bryan (for Welbeck 76), Fagan (for S. Evans 82), C. Evans, Galbraith.

Scorers: Eagles 34, Jones (pen) 90

You can read a full (albeit Oldham-slanted) report on the match here (i’ll have a link to the manutd.com match report as soon as it’s published), while MUTV will be showing the match in its entirety at 6pm tomorrow.

United are next in action on Thursday night when they face Bolton in a Lancashire Senior Cup semi-final at Leyland – more on that in the next couple of days. Bolton may also be the opposition in the final of the Manchester Senior Cup, but both they and Manchester City still have group fixtures to fulfil this month before the full details of that final can be confirmed.
