Tranmere 1 United XI 1: Honours even after Lingard leveller

United’s reserves continued their hectic pre-season programme with a creditable – if somewhat dour – 1-1 draw against League One Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

The hosts took an early lead through Mark McChrystal but Jesse Lingard’s strike brought the Reds level before half-time. With Warren Joyce’s side playing their third game in four days, fatigue was an obvious factor as an uneventful second 45 largely passed both teams by and the game drifted towards an always-inevitable draw.

Sir Alex’s show of faith in Amos – a double-edged sword?

With Ben Foster joining Birmingham City this week for a fee mooted to be in the region of £6m, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he won’t be looking to sign a replacement, instead preferring to promote 20 year-old reserve goalkeeper Ben Amos to the first team squad.

Liverpool 2 United 2: Reserves set the scene for Saturday as Liverpool claim fortunate point

Liverpool Reserves 2-2 Manchester United Reserves
Degen 5 Welbeck 20
Pacheco 49 Fábio 36

With Saturday’s Premier League clash between these two fierce rivals looming, the North-West giants’ respective second strings played out an entertaining and, at times, pulsating clash this evening at Warrington Wolves’ Halliwell Jones Stadium. Liverpool’s multi-national XI capitalised on defensive and goalkeeping lapses from the visitors early in each half – Philipp Degen and Dani Pacheco with the goals – but in between, a dominant United display saw Ole Solskjaer’s side take a deserved 2-1 lead into the break after fine goals from Danny Welbeck and Fábio da Silva. The second half never quite lived up to the quality of the first, the game petering out into an increasingly feisty and niggly affair and the home side definitely the happier with the final result.

United 0 Liverpool 0: Fierce rivals play out reserve bore draw

Posted by nickogs20 on January 29, 2009

Man Utd Liverpool
Manchester United Reserves 0-0 Liverpool Reserves

It would be fair to say that this is not one of those United-Liverpool clashes that will live long in the memory. Despite both teams fielding strong starting lineups featuring a number of players on the fringes of the two clubs’ respective title challenges, this was a game that never really got going, a game pretty much entirely starved of goalmouth action or drama. Ole Solskjaer’s side probably shaded things as far as possession and territory are concerned, but to all intents and purposes the two teams cancelled each other out on their way to a goalless draw that did little to improve their respective league positions.

Second string up and running after convincing win

Bolton Wanderers Man Utd
Bolton Wanderers Reserves 0-3 Manchester United Reserves
Macheda 45+3
Hewson 53
Cleverley 65

In hindsight, United’s reserve side probably couldn’t have hand-picked a better fixture in which to make amends for last week’s defeat against Wigan. The Reds had picked up five wins and two draws from their previous seven trips to the County Ground to play Bolton (as well as lifting the Lancashire Senior Cup at the same ground in July of this year) and, after a scrappy first-half had ended with Kiko Macheda putting United ahead, they never looked in any danger of having that unbeaten streak ended. Further goals from Sam Hewson and Tom Cleverley in a massively one-sided second half ensured a first league win of the campaign for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Heaton targeting United number one shirt

Posted by nickogs20 on June 14, 2008

Tom HeatonWith Edwin van der Sar showing no signs of slipping quietly into retirement and Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster already jostling for position in the queue behind him, the chances of a young keeper gatecrashing that three-way contest to seize the #1 shirt himself seem remote – but Tom Heaton doesn’t see it that way. The 22 year old got a taste of first-team action as a non-playing squad member for some key games last season – not least the Champions League Final in Moscow – and wants more of it. What’s more, he believes the season he is about to spend on loan at Cardiff City can be the perfect stepping stone towards that goal.

“It would mean everything to become Manchester United’s number one,” Heaton told the South Wales Echo. “As soon as I first signed and started to play for United at under-12 level that was the goal I set out to achieve. Nothing has changed since then. My move to Cardiff City is another step towards that target – and it is in the back of my mind all the time”.

The England U21 stopper will compete with former Blackburn and Villa keeper Peter Enckelman for the starting job at Ninian Park next season and is looking forward to it. “Cardiff have huge ambition to challenge for promotion next season and they play good football. They are two of the main reasons I was keen to sign. First and foremost my aim is to be number one. I need to be playing. After that, once the season gets going, it’s to push for promotion”.
