Loan Roundup: December 26
Posted by nickogs20 on December 27, 2010
Boxing Day football is one the great traditions of the English game but with the continued wintry weather rendering this year’s slate of fixtures something of a damp (or icy) squib, only three of United’s loanees had the chance to run off the turkey and trimmings this weekend…

Reserves: Hull 1 United 2 – Tošić tames the Tigers

Hull City Reserves | 1-2 | Manchester United Reserves |
Cullen 77 | – | Tošić 58, 90+2 |
Two goals from Zoran Tošić – the last deep into injury time – were enough to hand the Reds a deserved away win over Hull City and avenge last year’s reverse at Church Road.
The Serb international brilliantly opened the scoring just before the hour mark with a clever finish after a mazy run into the Hull penalty area. Mark Cullen’s opportunistic strike after a rare lapse in concentration at the back by the Reds looked to have salvaged the home side a somewhat fortunate share of the spoils, but Ole Solskjaer’s side had other ideas, pushing for the winner right until the end in typical United fashion and getting just reward in the second minute of added time, Tošić slotting home from the edge of the box to secure another hard-earned three points in the Barclays Premier Reserve League North.

Fixture frustration for U18s and Reserves
Posted by nickogs20 on November 13, 2009
Both Paul McGuinness’ U18 side and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s second string have had their upcoming games postponed.
Tomorrow’s Premier Academy League game with Stoke City has been called off after inclement weather this past week caused the pitch at the Potters’ Clayton Wood base to become waterlogged. Both teams have a free weekend at the end of this month but the short notice and probable Youth Cup considerations will likely mean the fixture will instead be re-arranged for some time in the spring. As usual, when we find out the new date, we’ll let you know.
Meanwhile the Reserves’ Manchester Senior Cup clash with Stockport County, originally scheduled for Monday night at Ashton United’s Hurst Cross ground, has been re-arranged for Thursday December 17th at County’s request. With Hull away next up on the fixture list on November 24th, Solskjaer’s side will have endured a frustrating three weeks without a game by that time.

United 4 Hull 0: Reserves tame the Tigers

Manchester United Reserves | 4-0 | Hull City Reserves |
Macheda 23 (pen) | – | – |
Welbeck 30 | – | – |
Possebon 51 | – | – |
Martin 58 | – | – |
United’s reserves continued their recent impressive form as Hull City were brushed aside in emphatic fashion en route to the second four-goal romp of the week. A bright start by the visitors was nipped in the bud when Kiko Macheda converted a penalty awarded for a trip on Lee Martin. Danny Welbeck added a second on the half-hour after fine work by Rodrigo Possebon, and the Brazilian added a third in the second half to end any doubt over the destination of all three points. A superb fourth from Martin well and truly gave the Reds revenge for their defeat on Humberside earlier in the campaign and ensured Ole Solskjaer’s side remained in touch with the rest of the chasing pack in the Premier Reserve League North.

Hull 2 United 1: Experienced Tigers too strong for Red reserves

Hull City Reserves | 2-1 | Manchester United Reserves |
Windass 51 | – | Stewart 90+3 |
France 65 | – | – |
Never has the old cliché of “it was like men playing against boys” been more appropriate. A United reserve side with an average age of just 18 (oldest player – Sam Hewson, 20 in ten days time) travelled to Humberside this evening to take on a Hull City team featuring four players in their thirties and a number of others over 20 and experience definitely told. Second-half goals from Dean Windass and Ryan France put the game beyond the young Reds, who could only respond deep into injury time with a great long-range consolation effort from Cameron Stewart.
