Loan Update: October 5

Posted by nickogs20 on October 6, 2010

International break it may be, but with eight United youngsters on loan in Leagues One and Two, there’s still something for Reds to keep an eye on at club level over the next fortnight – last night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy action for starters, which saw involvement for five of our loanees on what turned out to be quite a dramatic evening.

Reserves: United 1 Liverpool 0 – Gabby’s golden goal puts Reds on the brink of glory

Obertan 44

United are within touching distance of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North title after Gabriel Obertan’s glorious first-half strike clinched a 1-0 win over nearest challengers Liverpool.

With the Merseysiders trailing United by six points but having two games in hand heading into the game at Moss Lane, this meeting of fierce North West rivals was understandably billed as a title decider and was every bit as cagey and close-fought as you would expect from such an encounter. It took a stunning effort from Obertan on the brink of half-time to divide the two teams, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were good value for their win and now need just four points from their final two league games to clinch a first Northern section title in four years.

Wigan 4 United 5: Sensational comeback sees Reds edge nine-goal thriller

Posted by nickogs20 on February 18, 2009

Wigan Athletic Man Utd
Wigan Athletic Reserves 4-5 Manchester United Reserves
Cywka 33, 54 Welbeck 11, 69
Kupisz 45 Macheda 62, 67
Holt 58 (pen) Martin 80

It’s been a relatively sedate reserve season so far – lots of tight, cagey affairs, a smattering of 0-0 draws and not too many goals. Typical then that the one time the fixture lists conspired to have the first-team in action at the same time, the attention-starved second string were taking part in a quite exhilarating clash with Wigan at Robin Park. Nine goals, eight yellow cards, one red, penalties given and not given… this one had it all, including – ultimately – an astonishing comeback that clinched a first win for the Reds in this fixture since the Latics joined the Premer League North in 2005.

United 2 Chelsea 3: Youth Cup heartbreak as young Reds shoot themselves in the foot

Posted by nickogs20 on November 27, 2008

Man Utd Chelsea
Manchester United U18s 2-3 Chelsea U18s
Morrison 8 Kakuta 42
Welbeck 89 Nouble 45
Borini 84

After last year’s disappointing fourth round FA Youth Cup exit against Carlisle United, United’s U18s were desperate to mount a serious challenge for the trophy this season and to overcome a perilous third round draw that paired them with last year’s finalists Chelsea. The players and coaching staff will go to bed tonight (and will probably wake up tomorrow) wondering just how they will not be in the hat when the draw for the fourth round is made.

Missed chances and defensive lapses were the story of the night as a game United led through Ra’vel Morrison’s early goal and dominated for the first 42 minutes was spectacularly turned on its head by two Chelsea goals in three minutes before half-time. Those strikes (from Gäel Kakuta and Frank Nouble) left the Reds with a mountain to climb, one that eventually became unclimbable when Fabio Borini netted a killer third goal for the Blues on the counter attack. Danny Welbeck’s late effort gave the Reds hope but it wasn’t to be, and for the second straight season Paul McGuinness is left with the task of picking up the pieces after a desperately disappointing early exit from the Youth Cup.
