Lee Martin joins Nottingham Forest on loan

Reds’ winger Lee Martin is embarking on yet another loan spell after signing on with Championship new boys Nottingham Forest. The 21 year-old has been heavily involved in United’s pre-season programme and scored the winner in Durban as the Reds beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 on tour in South Africa, but hasn’t managed to force his way into Sir Alex Ferguson’s immediate first-team plans and has been allowed to go out on loan to his sixth different club.
Forest have beaten divisional rivals Birmingham City and Sheffield United to the 21 year-old’s temporary signature, with the youngster signing a initial one-month loan deal. It’s likely this will be extended in the very near future to either a 5/6 month deal or a loan for the full season, but one-month ’emergency’ loan deals allow players to be pressed straight into action for their new clubs, and Lee goes straight into the Colin Calderwood’s squad for the Carling Cup tie against Morecambe at the City Ground this evening. United’s willingness to allow the player to become cup-tied by taking part in tonight’s match supports the view that this move is a long-term one rather than a quick fix for the injury-hit East Midlands side.
After mixed success and some serious bad luck with injuries in his previous loan spells with Royal Antwerp, Rangers, Stoke City, Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield United this looks to be a make-or-break year for Lee’s United career, with anything less than a stellar campaign in the English second tier likely to leave the former Wimbledon schoolboy in the same sort of situation that Chris Eagles faced this summer. As with all our loanees, you can follow Lee’s progress via our weekly loan roundups – first one coming tonight/tomorrow morning, to cover the first weekend of Football League action and all the midweek Carling Cup fixtures involving our lads.
