Hot on the heels of the Reserves clinching their league title ten days ago, Paul McGuinness’ U18s will be looking to follow suit tomorrow morning as they travel to Bolton knowing that a win will see them crowned champions of Premier Academy League Group C.

United’s U18 side concluded academy league activity for 2009 in much the same way as they started it – with a win against their West Bromwich Albion counterparts at a chilly Carrington.
While not quite matching the level of performance shown in January’s Davide Petrucci-inspired 4-1 win over the Baggies, the Reds still raced into an early lead thanks to terrific long range strikes from central midfielders Paul Pogba and Ryan Tunnicliffe inside the first half-hour. George Thorne’s late goal was just reward for a valiant second-half effort by the visitors and ensured a nervy last few minutes for the hosts, but Paul McGuinness’ side held on to take all three points and head into Thursday’s Youth Cup clash with Birmingham – and the ensuing Christmas break – in fine form and high spirits.

After being left to stew for a fortnight on the disappointment that was the home draw against Liverpool, United returned to winning ways this morning in Walsall as they recovered from going a goal behind early on to beat West Bromwich Albion by three goals to two. Kiko Macheda, Matty James and Oliver Norwood were all on target for the Reds in the first half as they overcame a side managed by former United academy player Michael Appleton.

For most United fans, all the focus now and over the next couple of months will understandably be on players coming in (or potentially coming in), but spare a thought for those leaving Old Trafford – in particular those leaving to an uncertain future. Several players are set to be released or not have their contracts renewed this summer, and while United do everything they can to ensure these players find another club, there are essentially only so many professional contracts up for grabs each year and there are an awful lots of players competing for them.
