Just as it was for the now departed Fraizer Campbell earlier in the summer, it was a case of so near and yet so far for United’s England U19 trio Danny Welbeck, Danny Drinkwater and Matt James yesterday after the Young Lions fell at the final hurdle of the UEFA U19 European Championships to the hosts Ukraine.

Quartet get the call as England prepare for Euro U19 finals

As England get set for a European final against Germany at Under-21 level, Brian Eastick’s Under-19’s are preparing to launch their own bid to become age group champions of the continent in Ukraine next month. Four United youngsters will be part of the squad, with Eastick today selecting Ben Amos, Danny Drinkwater, Matt James and Danny Welbeck in his 18-man travelling party.
