U18s: Bolton 1 United 0 – Sampson strike sinks Reds

Bolton Wanderers U18s 1-0 Manchester United U18s
Sampson 66

United’s academy side slumped to a disappointing away defeat as Bolton’s youngsters proved too strong on a wintry morning at Lostock Hall Farm.

The Reds had their chances and struck the crossbar twice, but a physically imposing Wanderers side generally held the upper hand throughout and Jack Sampson’s deflected effort in the second half was enough to give them a deserved win and complete a rare league double over Paul McGuinness’ team.

U18s: United 5 Cardiff 0 – Bluebirds battered as Reds run riot

After the sensational comeback away at Chelsea last week, United’s U18s made it two wins from two in the Premier Academy League with an altogether more straightforward thrashing of Cardiff City at Carrington.

First half goals from defensive duo Sean McGinty and Michele Fornasier put the Reds into a commanding early lead and an outclassed Bluebirds side conceded three more after the interval, penalties from Tom Lawrence and Jack Barmby sandwiching a John Cofie strike as Paul McGuinness’ team continued their promising start to the new campaign.

U18s: United 1 Wolves 0 – Cofie sends Reds clear at the top

Man Utd Wolves
Manchester United U18s 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers U18s
Cofie 2

Early goals seem to have been the order of the day for United at all levels this past week and the U18s weren’t to be left out, John Cofie’s 2nd minute strike ultimately proving decisive as the Reds beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Carrington.

When Cofie raced clear and coolly slotted the ball past Wolves keeper Aaron McCarey with just 64 seconds on the clock it looked like an exciting and potentially goal-laden game may be in store, but that never quite materialised. A weary-looking United, coming off five games in Italy at the Memorial Sassi tournament last week, struggled to find any sort of rhythm going forward, while a fresher Wolves outfit arguably shaded possession and territory but were frustrated by a resilient Reds rearguard. Much to the visitors’ chagrin, Paul McGuinness’ side held on to record a hard-earned 1-0 win and seize top spot in Academy League Group C.

Reserves: Bolton 2 United 2 (Bolton win 3-2 on pens) – Reds endure more penalty pain in the MSC

Harsanyi SCORED Tunnicliffe MISSED
Eckersley SCORED Pogba MISSED

Deja vu was the order of the day at the County Ground in Leyland as, for the second season running, United’s reserves lost a Manchester Senior Cup tie to Bolton Wanderers after a dramatic penalty shootout.

A youthful United second string took an early lead through debutant Paul Pogba, only for Aaron Mooy to immediately level for the hosts. In a hectic second half that sequence was reversed, with Temitope Obadeyi putting Bolton 2-1 up for all of four minutes before Nicky Ajose’s sweetly-struck response. In truth the Reds were somewhat fortunate to take the game to penalties after Wanderers dominated the second 45 minutes, but once the shootout was underway, and the home side had missed their first two penalties, it looked for all the world that Ole Solskjaer’s side would prevail. Bolton keeper Robert Lainton had other ideas however, saving superbly from Ryan Tunnicliffe, Pogba and Cameron Stewart to engineer a remarkable turnaround and inflict more shootout misery on United’s reserves, who have now lost four of them in the last 13 months.

U18s: United 2 West Brom 1 – Pogba piledriver inspires Reds victory

Posted by nickogs20 on December 5, 2009

December 5th 2009, 11am
Trafford Training Centre, Carrington

Man Utd West Brom
Manchester United U18s 2-1 West Bromwich Albion U18s
Pogba 5 Thorne 89
Tunnicliffe 24

United’s U18 side concluded academy league activity for 2009 in much the same way as they started it – with a win against their West Bromwich Albion counterparts at a chilly Carrington.

While not quite matching the level of performance shown in January’s Davide Petrucci-inspired 4-1 win over the Baggies, the Reds still raced into an early lead thanks to terrific long range strikes from central midfielders Paul Pogba and Ryan Tunnicliffe inside the first half-hour. George Thorne’s late goal was just reward for a valiant second-half effort by the visitors and ensured a nervy last few minutes for the hosts, but Paul McGuinness’ side held on to take all three points and head into Thursday’s Youth Cup clash with Birmingham – and the ensuing Christmas break – in fine form and high spirits.

Cleverley’s U21 bow headlines long list of international callups

Posted by nickogs20 on September 3, 2009

As ever during international breaks, the main focus of fans and media is on the many United first-teamers away representing their countries in the next week or so (an alarming 16 away with senior national sides this time around), but there’s an equally lengthy list of young players in action in various age groups and competitions to keep track of. Here’s a quick rundown on who, where and when…

Tottenham 1 United 3: U18s bounce back in style to stun Spurs

United’s U18 side produced the perfect response to last week’s opening day defeat with an impressive dismantling of Tottenham at Spurs Lodge this morning. The damage was done in a scintillating first half-hour as the Reds raced into a 3-0 lead with goals from John Cofie, Robbie Brady and Joshua King, and while Spurs pulled a goal back early in the second half and made much more of a fight of it, United weathered the storm and ultimately ran out comfortable winners.

Milk Cup 2009: Reds reign again in the Coleraine rain

Posted by nickogs20 on July 31, 2009

There was a distinct sense of deja vu in the air this evening as Paul McGuinness’ side took to the field for the Milk Cup final in exactly the same sort of atrocious Coleraine weather they experienced as they won the competition last season, and while there wasn’t quite the same dominant, swashbuckling performance that we witnessed 12 months ago, goals from Michael Ngoo and Etzaz Hussain ensured there was ultimately the same result – a Manchester United victory and more silverware for the Old Trafford trophy cabinet.

Milk Cup 2009: Reds hold their nerve to dispatch Desportivo on penalties

Posted by nickogs20 on July 29, 2009

It was nailbiting stuff on the north coast this evening as United’s Milk Cup hopes were kept alive with a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Desportivo Brasil at the Limavady Showgrounds. After a hard-fought seventy minutes that saw the deadlock remain unbroken, centre-half Sean McGinty struck the winning spot-kick to send the Reds into the semi-finals.
