Blue Stars 2009: An overview

Posted by nickogs20 on May 22, 2009

With the official Blue Stars tournament website lacking somewhat in terms of the accuracy of its match stats (scorers, lineups etc) and the detail of its match reports, we’re delighted to be able to bring you an in-depth and accurate report on United’s two days in Zurich from someone who was there and saw the action unfold.

Blue Stars 2009: Day 1

Posted by nickogs20 on May 20, 2009

It would be fair to describe United’s first day of this year’s Blue Stars as something of an up and down one. With a win, a draw and a crushing defeat, the Reds’ hopes of contesting the final tomorrow afternoon are hanging by a thread.

United 2 Everton 0: Unbeaten run continues as Reserves stroll to fifth straight home win

Posted by nickogs20 on April 16, 2009

April 16th 2009, 7pm
Moss Lane, Altrincham

Man Utd Everton
Manchester United Reserves 2-0 Everton Reserves
Drinkwater 9
de Laet 17

United’s reserves extended their current unbeaten record in all competitions (home and away) to eight games and moved back into second place in the Premier Reserve League North with a thoroughly convincing 2-0 victory against their Everton counterparts at Moss Lane this evening. Early goals from Danny Drinkwater – officially his first of the season – and Ritchie de Laet – his first for United – stunned Everton, and by half-time it really should have been four or five, Zoran Tošić hitting the bar twice amongst a number of other chances for the Reds. The visitors came into the game late on with first-team striker James Vaughan looking dangerous, but the result of the match was never really in doubt.

United 4 Hull 0: Reserves tame the Tigers

Man Utd Hull
Manchester United Reserves 4-0 Hull City Reserves
Macheda 23 (pen)
Welbeck 30
Possebon 51
Martin 58

United’s reserves continued their recent impressive form as Hull City were brushed aside in emphatic fashion en route to the second four-goal romp of the week. A bright start by the visitors was nipped in the bud when Kiko Macheda converted a penalty awarded for a trip on Lee Martin. Danny Welbeck added a second on the half-hour after fine work by Rodrigo Possebon, and the Brazilian added a third in the second half to end any doubt over the destination of all three points. A superb fourth from Martin well and truly gave the Reds revenge for their defeat on Humberside earlier in the campaign and ensured Ole Solskjaer’s side remained in touch with the rest of the chasing pack in the Premier Reserve League North.

Rochdale 1 United 4: Fantastic Fábio fires Reds into LSC semis

Rochdale Man Utd
Rochdale Reserves 1-4 Manchester United Reserves
Reidy 17 Fábio 26, 41, 48, missed pen 21
Welbeck 58

United’s reserve side roared into the semi-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup this afternoon after resoundingly beating Rochdale 4-1 at Spotland. The defending champions took a while to find their feet and fell behind early on to a Joe Reidy header, but that goal only served to spark the Reds into life as Fábio da Silva well and truly took centre-stage. When the little Brazilian left-back missed a penalty he had won shortly after the home side’s opener, he could have been forgiven for letting his head drop…. instead, he went and scored a hattrick, two predatory finishes from close range book-ending a sublime volley after some breathtaking build-up play. When Danny Welbeck made it four before the hour mark it looked like Ole Solskjaer’s side could rack up a cricket score, only some fine goalkeeping and wasteful finishing keeping the scoreline vaguely respectable for the home team as United booked a semi-final date with Preston North End.

Liverpool 2 United 2: Reserves set the scene for Saturday as Liverpool claim fortunate point

Posted by nickogs20 on March 12, 2009

Liverpool Man Utd
Liverpool Reserves 2-2 Manchester United Reserves
Degen 5 Welbeck 20
Pacheco 49 Fábio 36

With Saturday’s Premier League clash between these two fierce rivals looming, the North-West giants’ respective second strings played out an entertaining and, at times, pulsating clash this evening at Warrington Wolves’ Halliwell Jones Stadium. Liverpool’s multi-national XI capitalised on defensive and goalkeeping lapses from the visitors early in each half – Philipp Degen and Dani Pacheco with the goals – but in between, a dominant United display saw Ole Solskjaer’s side take a deserved 2-1 lead into the break after fine goals from Danny Welbeck and Fábio da Silva. The second half never quite lived up to the quality of the first, the game petering out into an increasingly feisty and niggly affair and the home side definitely the happier with the final result.

United 1 City 0: Reds complete clean sweep over City to reach MSC final

Martin 35 (pen)

They put three past them back in October, two past them at the back end of last month and tonight, just one goal was enough to earn United’s reserves victory over their Manchester City counterparts for a third time this season, earning themselves a place in the final of this season’s Manchester Senior Cup in the process. The defending champions went into tonight’s rain-lashed clash at Hyde United’s Ewen Fields ground knowing that a win would secure qualification to the final. Lee Martin’s first-half strike and a resolute performance from a makeshift defence duly secured the necessary result and set up a repeat of last season’s MSC final – Manchester United vs Bolton Wanderers.

United 1 Boro 0: Fab-ulous finale as Reds grind out another win

Posted by nickogs20 on March 5, 2009

Man Utd Middlesbrough
Manchester United Reserves 1-0 Middlesbrough Reserves
Fábio 90 (pen)

It would be fair to say that this one won’t live long in the memory. After 91 minutes, every hardy soul left in the ground was surely wondering whether spending the evening at a freezing Moss Lane was really worth their while and very much looking forward to getting home. Thankfully, those who stuck it out to the end were rewarded and made their way home in much better spirits, United winning the game in the third minute of stoppage time as the last kick of the game saw Fábio da Silva coolly slot home a penalty kick won by Cameron Stewart. A relatively even game – which may have been lacking in excitement but certainly wasn’t in effort – saw Boro spurn the better chances in the first half before the home side had the best of a second 45 which looked to be petering out until that late, late winner.
