Released U16’s get Villa chance

Posted by nickogs20 on May 29, 2008

After the blow of not being offered scholarships at United earlier this year, Jason Lampkin and Tomos Roberts have landed on their feet somewhat by securing apprenticeships at another Premier League club, Aston Villa. England U16 midfielder Lampkin has spent the last couple of months on trial with a number of top-flight clubs following his surprising release by United, and despite strong (and widely publicised) interest from Blackburn Rovers, the lad from Hawarden opted to sign with Villa, a club with an excellent recent track record in bringing through youngsters to the first-team squad. Speaking to the Flintshire Chronicle, Lampkin’s father Mark said “There are plenty of players who have come from Villa’s academy and are now playing in the first team, and some of the younger players who have not quite made the breakthrough into the first team have been given squad numbers, which is encouraging”.

Lampkin will be joined at the Villa academy by former United U16 team-mate and friend Tomos Roberts. The Denbigh-born Welsh international left-back has had a similar last few months out on trial with various clubs and Villa again have got the nod. Both players will move into digs in Birmingham after finishing their GCSE’s this summer. Another former U16 player released earlier this year, keeper Niki-Lee Bulmer, has already secured a scholarship at Queens Park Rangers. All three players have plenty of potential, best of luck to them in the future.

Loan Roundup – March 29-30

Fresh from making his England under-21 debut in midweek, Fraizer Campbell further enhanced his burgeoning reputation in Hull’s 3-0 victory over fellow promotion contenders Watford at the KC Stadium. In netting the second goal of the game from close range, Fraizer took his goal tally for the season to fourteen, and Hull now sit just two points off the Championship summit in third place.

Should Hull’s fantastic season end in promotion to the Premier League, it seems they will almost certainly count Roy Keane’s Sunderland side amongst their opponents next season after Jonny Evans helped the wearside outfit to a crucial home win over West Ham, the winning goal coming in the 6th minute of injury time – Evans once more impressing at the heart of defence.

Danny Simpson made his full debut in Ipswich’s goalless draw with QPR at Portman Road, impressing this reporter and generally earning solid reviews on Ipswich message boards. Kieran Lee made an appearance from the bench for the visitors, and to quote loftforwords.co.uk “De Canio also sent on Kieran Lee for Rowan Vine who’d had a pretty poor game and that tidied QPR up a lot with Lee excellent on the ball, springing numerous counter attacks with balls from midfield, and solid in defence and tracking back. I really don’t understand why we don’t use him more.”

Wolves’ dramatic 3-2 win at the Valley pushed them into the Championship play-off positions with Darron Gibson coming on for a rollercoaster last 20 minutes which saw former Reds striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake give Wolves the lead with a sensational strike – his second of the game – before a late Charlton equaliser and an even later Wolves winner.

Having failed to make an impression on loan at Chesterfield, Michael Barnes got off to a more positive start at his second loan club of the season, playing the full ninety in Shrewsbury’s home defeat to Bury.

Febian Brandy sat out Swansea’s encounter with Hartlepool, the third game of his three-match ban after being sent off against Bristol Rovers earlier in the month, while Lee Martin missed Sheffield United’s trip to Preston as he continued to recover from a knee problem. There was positive news on that front as Blades boss Kevin Blackwell revealed the injury may not need season-ending surgery as first feared. Martin is currently back at United recieving treatment, and Blackwell said “If Lee comes through a week’s worth of training with them then they’ve told us he probably won’t need an operation. If so, there’s a chance he could be ready in time for Leicester (April 5).”
