September in Review: Eikrem takes Player of the Month honours

Posted by nickogs20 on October 5, 2010

It’s been another impressive month for United’s youngsters across all levels, leaving us with a tough decision when picking September’s star man. While a couple of players have made compelling cases with their goalscoring exploits, we’ve gone for a man who’s predominantly a creator – the reserves’ captain and playmaking midfield maestro Magnus Eikrem.

U18s: United 3 Blackburn 2 – Late Keane spot-kick clinches dramatic win

Posted by nickogs20 on October 2, 2010

October 2nd 2010, 11am
Trafford Training Centre, Carrington

Man Utd Blackburn
Manchester United U18s 3-2 Blackburn Rovers U18s
Morrison 28 MacLaren 4
Pogba 76 O’Connor 57
W.Keane 90+4 (pen)

Will Keane’s injury time penalty grabbed United all three points against Blackburn as a terrific game at Carrington ended in dramatic and controversial fashion.

United fell behind twice to goals by Jamie MacLaren and Anthony O’Connor but fought back each time, levelling through Ravel Morrison and Paul Pogba to set up a tense finale. The Reds’ chances of securing a win looked to have disappeared after they had a clear penalty for a foul on John Cofie turned down in the final minute, but justice was done deep into time added on as Michele Fornasier’s volley was blocked by a hand and Keane stepped up to coolly send the keeper the wrong way with practically the last kick of the match.

U18s: United 5 Cardiff 0 – Bluebirds battered as Reds run riot

Posted by nickogs20 on August 29, 2010

August 28th 2010, 11am
Trafford Training Centre, Carrington

Man Utd Cardiff
Manchester United U18s 5-0 Cardiff City U18s
McGinty 19
Fornasier 24
Lawrence 56 (pen)
Cofie 60
Barmby 87 (pen)

After the sensational comeback away at Chelsea last week, United’s U18s made it two wins from two in the Premier Academy League with an altogether more straightforward thrashing of Cardiff City at Carrington.

First half goals from defensive duo Sean McGinty and Michele Fornasier put the Reds into a commanding early lead and an outclassed Bluebirds side conceded three more after the interval, penalties from Tom Lawrence and Jack Barmby sandwiching a John Cofie strike as Paul McGuinness’ team continued their promising start to the new campaign.

U18s: United 1 Spurs 3: Reds flop in final friendly

Posted by nickogs20 on August 14, 2010

FRIENDLY
August 14th 2010, 10.30am
Trafford Training Centre, Carrington

Man Utd Spurs
Manchester United U18s 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur U18s
Cofie 39 Kane 9
Oyenuga 31, 60

United’s U18s ended their pre-season preparations in disappointing fashion after losing 3-1 to an impressive Spurs side.

The visitors’ talented strike pairing did the damage, Harry Kane and Kudus Oyenuga each grabbing a goal early on as Alex Inglethorpe’s side dominated. John Cofie’s fine finish just before the break seemed set to spark a comeback, but Oyenuga added a third from the penalty spot to seal a comprehensive win for the North Londoners.
