Reserves: Oxford 1 United 2: Reds ride their luck as Ajose nicks the winner

United’s Reserves got their pre-season campaign back on track with a late late victory over Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.

After spurning an early chance to take the lead when Magnus Eikrem saw his penalty saved, the Reds seemed to have snatched a half-time advantage when the Norwegian made amends by curling home a free-kick a minute before the break, only for the hosts to respond immediately through James Constable. Oxford had the better of an extremely competitive second half and looked the more likely winners but, with time almost up, Nicky Ajose popped up at the far post to volley home and clinch a dramatic win in textbook United fashion.

Oxford United 2 United Reserves 2: Resilient Reds stay unbeaten in pre-season after stirring comeback

With the hosts 2-0 to the good after 52 minutes of this encounter at the Kassam Stadium you could have been forgiven for thinking the wheels had slightly come off the reserves’ encouraging pre-season campaign so far, but Reds’ boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked on as his young team produced a comeback the great man would have himself been proud of. Well-worked goals on the break from Danny Drinkwater and skipper Sam Hewson earned United a thoroughly deserved point that showed there’s something of a steely side there to compliment the slick passing and skills.

Pre-season schedule taking shape

Posted by nickogs20 on June 14, 2008

The Champions Youth Cup may be off, but other pre-season fixtures for the Reserve and Academy sides are regularly being announced and we can now get a decent idea of how things are shaping up on that front.

~ Merseyside non-league outfit Burscough have announced a friendly against a United reserve side on Saturday July 12th (incidentally the same day the first team are due to play a friendly in Aberdeen, so a few reserve regulars may be otherwise engaged in Scotland).

~ A week later a United XI (essentially a reserve side) will make the short trip to Moss Lane to face Altrincham (Saturday July 19th).

~ Another Saturday, another United XI in action – this time at Blue Square Premier side Oxford United’s Kassam Stadium. United last played there two seasons ago, when Ronaldo played his first game back on English soil after the infamous incident with Wayne Rooney at the World Cup in Germany.

~ The only confirmed academy friendly so far is an August 12th trip to Gigg Lane for the annual clash with Bury.

I’d expect a couple more games to be announced over the coming weeks, and of course several reserve players will be involved in the first-team’s pre-season schedule, which includes a tour of South Africa and Nigeria as well as Old Trafford friendlies against Espanyol and Juventus and domestic trips to Aberdeen, Peterborough and Wembley for the Community Shield.

Where next for those moving on?

Posted by nickogs20 on June 7, 2008

For most United fans, all the focus now and over the next couple of months will understandably be on players coming in (or potentially coming in), but spare a thought for those leaving Old Trafford – in particular those leaving to an uncertain future. Several players are set to be released or not have their contracts renewed this summer, and while United do everything they can to ensure these players find another club, there are essentially only so many professional contracts up for grabs each year and there are an awful lots of players competing for them.
