U18s: United 1 Wolves 0 – Cofie sends Reds clear at the top

Man Utd Wolves
Manchester United U18s 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers U18s
Cofie 2

Early goals seem to have been the order of the day for United at all levels this past week and the U18s weren’t to be left out, John Cofie’s 2nd minute strike ultimately proving decisive as the Reds beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Carrington.

When Cofie raced clear and coolly slotted the ball past Wolves keeper Aaron McCarey with just 64 seconds on the clock it looked like an exciting and potentially goal-laden game may be in store, but that never quite materialised. A weary-looking United, coming off five games in Italy at the Memorial Sassi tournament last week, struggled to find any sort of rhythm going forward, while a fresher Wolves outfit arguably shaded possession and territory but were frustrated by a resilient Reds rearguard. Much to the visitors’ chagrin, Paul McGuinness’ side held on to record a hard-earned 1-0 win and seize top spot in Academy League Group C.

U18: United 2 Sunderland 0 – Reds leave it late to beat Black Cats

Down to the bare bones, without a win in three games and facing one of the strongest and most free-scoring sides in academy football, United’s U18s confounded all expectations at Carrington to grind out a gutsy, morale-boosting 2-0 win over Sunderland.

The Black Cats perhaps shaded a cagey first half and were definitely well on top in the early stages of the second, dominating possession and having much the better of the chances. The makeshift Reds eventually weathered the storm however and finished the stronger, Nicky Ajose making the crucial breakthrough in the 81st minute and putting a gloss on the win from the penalty spot two minutes from time.

U18s: United 1 Newcastle 1 – Reds pick up a point, but lose top spot

Posted by nickogs20 on March 16, 2010

March 13th 2010, 12pm
Trafford Training Centre, Carrington

Man Utd Newcastle
Manchester United U18s 1-1 Newcastle United U18s
Pogba 27 McDermott 11

For the second week running United were held to a draw on home turf, Newcastle the opponents this time as the Reds again had to come back from a goal down just to earn a point.

Paul McGuinness’ side started strongly but gifted the Magpies the opening goal with little more than ten minutes played, some haphazard defending leaving Greg McDermott with a simple tap-in. Unperturbed, the Reds kept their heads and continued to look the more dangerous side going forward and got back on terms just before the half hour mark as Paul Pogba glanced home Ajose’s near post freekick. United should have built on that, Joshua King going closest with a fierce strike that rattled the bar, but the blustery conditions at Carrington took their toll on a game that fizzled out as it wore on, neither side really ever looking likely to grab a winner in a drab second half.

U18s: United 2 Crewe 2 – Clinical Keane earns Reds a deserve share of the spoils

Man Utd Crewe
Manchester United U18s 2-2 Crewe Alexandra U18s
Ajose 4 Koral 17
W Keane 83 Oswell 62

A late equaliser from Will Keane salvaged a deserved point for United and kept the Reds on top of Academy League Group C after bogey side Crewe Alexandra had threatened to win at Carrington for the fourth season in a row.

Nicky Ajose’s fine early strike had got the Reds off to the perfect start but, in keeping with what was to be an open and end-to-end encounter, the visitors levelled twelve minutes later through Michael Koral. While United began to assert their dominance in the second half, it was the Railwaymen who took the lead via the head of Jason Oswell, and Paul McGuinness’ side had to rely on top scorer Keane to save the day with a typically cool finish seven minutes from time.

U18s: United 3 Stoke 2 – Reds roar back to claim the points

It wouldn’t be a Manchester United season at any level without a stirring comeback or two, and on a foggy morning at Carrington, Paul McGuinness’ U18s produced another classic against a Stoke City side who held a 2-0 lead at the hour mark and were still a goal in front as the game headed into the final ten minutes.

Andy Nichols handed the Potters an early lead during a first half that was enough to make you yearn for a wall with a fresh coat of Dulux to watch instead, and when Reece Brown put through his own net ten minutes into the second 45, the Reds looked to have a mountain to climb. The referee came to their aid with the equivalent of a chairlift halfway up Everest in the form of a very dubious penalty decision, and after Nicky Ajose converted, incessant United pressure in the final hour eventually saw the visitors crumble with the victory post in sight, John Cofie and Etzaz Hussain grabbing the goals from close-range that completed a remarkable turnaround and provided a huge injection of confidence ahead of Thursday’s much-anticipated Youth Cup clash with Blackburn.

Reserves: Bolton 2 United 2 (Bolton win 3-2 on pens) – Reds endure more penalty pain in the MSC

Mooy SCORED Stewart MISSED

Deja vu was the order of the day at the County Ground in Leyland as, for the second season running, United’s reserves lost a Manchester Senior Cup tie to Bolton Wanderers after a dramatic penalty shootout.

A youthful United second string took an early lead through debutant Paul Pogba, only for Aaron Mooy to immediately level for the hosts. In a hectic second half that sequence was reversed, with Temitope Obadeyi putting Bolton 2-1 up for all of four minutes before Nicky Ajose’s sweetly-struck response. In truth the Reds were somewhat fortunate to take the game to penalties after Wanderers dominated the second 45 minutes, but once the shootout was underway, and the home side had missed their first two penalties, it looked for all the world that Ole Solskjaer’s side would prevail. Bolton keeper Robert Lainton had other ideas however, saving superbly from Ryan Tunnicliffe, Pogba and Cameron Stewart to engineer a remarkable turnaround and inflict more shootout misery on United’s reserves, who have now lost four of them in the last 13 months.

Youth Cup: United 2 Birmingham 0 – Reds edge past battling Blues

Posted by nickogs20 on December 11, 2009

December 10th 2009, 7pm
Moss Lane, Altrincham

Man Utd Birmingham
Manchester United U18s 2-0 Birmingham City U18s
Pogba 1
Ajose 30

It wasn’t particularly convincing, it certainly wasn’t all that pretty but ultimately, a hard-fought 2-0 win over Birmingham City was enough to send United’s academy side through to Round Four of this year’s FA Youth Cup.

Things couldn’t have started better for Paul McGuinness’ side, who were ahead before the clock had even reached the sixty-second mark thanks to some slack marking from the visitors and a smart header from Paul Pogba. United struggled to build on that early advantage however and the Blues gave as good as they got, maybe even having the better of the first-half and likely feeling more than a little unfortunate to go in two behind at the break after Nicky Ajose doubled the Reds’ lead on the half-hour mark.

With Birmingham still very much in the game, a pivotal moment came eight minutes into the second half as the Blues were awarded something of a soft penalty, only for striker Jake Jervis to see his penalty brilliantly saved by Conor Devlin. A goal there and it could have been a very different game but that miss seemed to drain the visitors’ belief, and the Reds saw out the rest of a tricky tie in relative comfort to ensure their name would be in the hat for tomorrow’s fourth round draw.
