Reserves: United 2 Everton 0 – Anderson-inspired Reds stroll to victory

Posted by nickogs20 on February 19, 2010

February 18th 2009, 7pm
Moss Lane, Altrincham

Man Utd Everton
Manchester United Reserves 2-0 Everton Reserves
Diouf 44
Stewart 45+2

After a fortnight of frozen pitches and fixture frustration, United’s reserves returned to action with a convincing win over a youthful Everton second string at Moss Lane.

Bolstered by the relative experience of Anderson, Mame Biram Diouf, Gabriel Obertan, Ben Foster and Fábio da Silva, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side always looked too strong for a committed but outclassed Toffees outfit and dominated the ninety minutes, with perhaps the only surprise being that the scoring was limited to just a three minute period at the end of the first half. A fine performance from Iain Turner in the visitors’ goal was the primary reason for this, but the young Scot was powerless to keep out Diouf’s fine strike after an Anderson-led counter or Cameron Stewart’s precise finish from the edge of the area.

Reserves: United 1 Bolton 0 – Reds see off familiar foe

Posted by nickogs20 on January 29, 2010

Januuary 28th 2009, 7pm
Moss Lane, Altrincham

Man Utd Bolton
Manchester United Reserves 1-0 Bolton Wanderers Reserves
Gray 44

If familiarity really does breed contempt, these two sides are going to be absolutely sick of each other by the end of the season. United’s second string took on their Bolton Wanderers counterparts for the fourth (and not necessarily final) time this term and successfully avenged December’s penalty shootout defeat to the Trotters with a 1-0 win at Moss Lane.

In a game that never got close to matching the drama, excitement and goal tally of that last meeting, it took a goal from the unlikely figure of David Gray on the brink of half-time to break the deadlock and decide a contest that was marred by the incessant Manchester rain. The Reds could and should have secured a more comfortable margin of victory, but just the one goal was ultimately enough to take the three points and leapfrog Liverpool at the top of the Premier Reserve League North.

Youth Cup: United 2 Birmingham 0 – Reds edge past battling Blues

Posted by nickogs20 on December 11, 2009

December 10th 2009, 7pm
Moss Lane, Altrincham

Man Utd Birmingham
Manchester United U18s 2-0 Birmingham City U18s
Pogba 1
Ajose 30

It wasn’t particularly convincing, it certainly wasn’t all that pretty but ultimately, a hard-fought 2-0 win over Birmingham City was enough to send United’s academy side through to Round Four of this year’s FA Youth Cup.

Things couldn’t have started better for Paul McGuinness’ side, who were ahead before the clock had even reached the sixty-second mark thanks to some slack marking from the visitors and a smart header from Paul Pogba. United struggled to build on that early advantage however and the Blues gave as good as they got, maybe even having the better of the first-half and likely feeling more than a little unfortunate to go in two behind at the break after Nicky Ajose doubled the Reds’ lead on the half-hour mark.

With Birmingham still very much in the game, a pivotal moment came eight minutes into the second half as the Blues were awarded something of a soft penalty, only for striker Jake Jervis to see his penalty brilliantly saved by Conor Devlin. A goal there and it could have been a very different game but that miss seemed to drain the visitors’ belief, and the Reds saw out the rest of a tricky tie in relative comfort to ensure their name would be in the hat for tomorrow’s fourth round draw.

United 1 Liverpool 1 (Liverpool win 4-3 on pens): Reds robbed as shoot-out setback ends LSC reign

LIVERPOOL WIN 4-3 ON PENALTIES

Macheda SCORED Irwin SCORED
Brandy SCORED Ayala SCORED
Tošić SCORED Mavinga SCORED
James MISSED Eccleston SCORED
de Laet MISSED

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side were left rueing the ineptitude of the officials and their own profligacy in front of goal as defeat – via a penalty shoot-out – to arch-rivals Liverpool at Moss Lane ended their hopes of a third successive Lancashire Senior Cup triumph.

Behind at the break through Nathan Eccleston’s well-taken (if a little fortuitous) strike, the Reds had nevertheless controlled the game and eventually got themselves level thanks to a terrific freekick from substitute Zoran Tošić. United’s Serbian winger was then clearly felled in the box, but instead of having a chance to win the tie with one well-earned spot-kick in normal time, the reigning champs had to endure the lottery of a shoot-out, where Liverpool ‘keeper Dean Bouzanis was the hero with decisive saves from Matt James and Ritchie de Laet.

United 3 Blackburn 0: Reserves outclass Rovers to regain top spot

Posted by nickogs20 on October 23, 2009

October 22nd 2009, 7pm
Moss Lane, Altrincham

Man Utd Blackburn
Manchester United Reserves 3-0 Blackburn Rovers Reserves
Eikrem 18
Brandy 80
Tošić 90+1

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reserves kept up their 100% home record and moved back to the summit of the Premier Reserve League North this evening by defeating their Blackburn Rovers counterparts 3-0 at Moss Lane.

United were good value for the win, but were made to wait until the final ten minutes of the game to clinch all three points and give the scoreline some gloss. Magnus Eikrem’s superb 18th minute freekick had given the Reds an early lead, but despite proceeding to dominate the remainder of the match, it wasn’t until Febian Brandy rose highest to head home a Zoran Tošić corner on 80 minutes that the points were made safe. Tošić then rounded things off nicely with a well-struck effort from 20 yards inside injury time.

United 2 Wigan 1: Anderson strikes to kickstart comeback

Posted by nickogs20 on September 3, 2009

September 3rd 2009, 7pm
Moss Lane, Altrincham

Man Utd Bolton
Manchester United Reserves 2-1 Wigan Athletic Reserves
Anderson 38 Cywka 17 (pen)
Eikrem 48

A comeback against Wigan was perhaps the highlight of last season for the Reserves, and while this wasn’t quite as dramatic as that epic 5-4 win, Ole Solskjaer’s side again overturned a deficit against the Latics this evening to maintain their unblemished start to the new campaign.

A clumsy challenge from Cameron Stewart enabled Tomas Cywka to hand the visitors the lead from the penalty spot, but United drew level five minutes before the break thanks to that rarest of things – an Anderson goal from open play. Second-half substitute Joshua King brilliantly set up fellow Norwegian Magnus Eikrem for what proved to be the winner, and only that irksome combination of fine goalkeeping and wayward finishing prevented the Reds from recording a more emphatic margin of victory.

United 5 Bury 0: Shakers shaken as Reds fire five

Posted by nickogs20 on August 27, 2009

August 27th 2009, 7pm
Moss Lane, Altrincham

Man Utd Bury
Manchester United Reserves 5-0 Bury Reserves
Hewson 5
Macheda 31 (pen), 50
Stewart 36
Moffatt 70

United made an emphatic start to their bid to win the Manchester Senior Cup for a third consecutive year this evening, Bury the unfortunate side on the receiving end of a five-star showing from Ole Solskjaer’s Reserves at Moss Lane.

Sam Hewson picked up where he left off against Bolton on Monday night and handed the Reds a fifth-minute lead. Bury’s backline could have been forgiven at that point for thinking they were in for a long night, and so it proved as Kiko Macheda (twice), Cameron Stewart and Scott Moffatt all found the net and established a scoreline that barely reflected United’s dominance over the ninety minutes.
