Venue switch sees Reserves return to former home

Posted by nickogs20 on October 29, 2008

BoltonUnited’s home Manchester Senior Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers tomorrow evening (Thursday) has been switched from the reserves’ usual home at Northwich Victoria’s Marstons Arena to their home from a few seasons ago, Altrincham FC’s Moss Lane.

Moss Lane played host to the Reds’ second string between 2002 and 2005 and was the scene of some great success towards the end of that period as the reserves racked up the silverware under the guidance of Rene Meulensteen. More recently, the reserves won 3-0 in a pre-season friendly against Altrincham back in July of this year, a game that was unfortunately marred by crowd trouble and abandoned shortly before full-time.

Anyone planning to go and watch this game who maybe hasn’t been to Moss Lane before will be pleased to hear the ground is a lot easier to get to than the Marstons Arena, pretty much regardless of the method of transport you’re using – all relevant information can be found here. Admission tomorrow night is £5 adults, £2 concessions and free to all United season ticket holders and OneUnited members on production of their access/membership cards.

We’ll have the team news as soon as it’s made available tomorrow and a full match report later in the evening.

Goals from Matty James and Sam Hewson, the latter an absolute screamer, earned the Reds all three points after the visitors had briefly threatened a shock by taking the lead in the first five minutes.

United 1 Wigan 2: Last-minute Latics stun Solskjaer’s second string

Mahon 90

A rare moment of real quality from Wigan’s Irish forward Craig Mahon in the final minute of an otherwise scrappy match condemned Ole Solskjaer to a first defeat as reserves manager just minutes after David Gray’s headed equaliser seemed to have preserved the Norwegian’s unbeaten record. Matty Hampson had earlier given the Latics the lead just after the interval in a match that saw both sides hampered by the near-torrential Northwich rain.

Second string disappoint in goalless opener

Man Utd Blackburn Rovers
Manchester United Reserves 0-0 Blackburn Rovers Reserves

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side had to settle for a point from their first league game of the season as several players failed to perform to the standard they had set for themselves in pre-season. United never really got going in an attacking sense and the visitors had the better chances in a game arguably most notable for another injury to Reds keeper Ben Foster.

A solitary second-half strike from the increasingly prolific Danny Drinkwater gave United victory in the first leg of this intriguing double-header between the reserve teams of the top two sides in the country, Chelsea’s second string giving Ole Solskjaer’s men by far their toughest match of pre-season so far in a hard-fought and engaging clash at the Marstons Arena.
