United 1 Liverpool 1 (Liverpool win 4-3 on pens): Reds robbed as shoot-out setback ends LSC reign

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side were left rueing the ineptitude of the officials and their own profligacy in front of goal as defeat – via a penalty shoot-out – to arch-rivals Liverpool at Moss Lane ended their hopes of a third successive Lancashire Senior Cup triumph.

Behind at the break through Nathan Eccleston’s well-taken (if a little fortuitous) strike, the Reds had nevertheless controlled the game and eventually got themselves level thanks to a terrific freekick from substitute Zoran Tošić. United’s Serbian winger was then clearly felled in the box, but instead of having a chance to win the tie with one well-earned spot-kick in normal time, the reigning champs had to endure the lottery of a shoot-out, where Liverpool ‘keeper Dean Bouzanis was the hero with decisive saves from Matt James and Ritchie de Laet.

Pre-season programme takes shape; date set for LSC Final

Posted by nickogs20 on June 16, 2009

2008/09 is done and dusted but, as is evermore the case in football these days, the start of the next campaign will soon be upon us, kicking off with the first pre-season fixtures in little over a month. While the first team will be touring Asia, taking part in the inaugural Audi Cup in Munich and entertaining Valencia at Old Trafford, the reserves and academy have their own itinerary fast taking shape.

Preston 0 United 4: Reserves turn on the second-half style en route to another final

Posted by nickogs20 on April 20, 2009

April 20th 2009, 2pm
Deepdale, Preston

Preston Man Utd
Preston North End Reserves 0-4 Manchester United Reserves
Drinkwater 58
Martin 60
Ajose 75
James 84

United may have suffered semi-final heartbreak at Wembley yesterday, but no such fate or drama awaited the reserves today as a stirring second-half display saw them comfortably overcome Preston by four goals to nil on a beautifully sunny afternoon at Deepdale. After dominating a tepid first-half without overly threatening the Preston goal, the Reds found their shooting boots in the second half and simply overpowered a Lilywhites side who worked hard but were ultimately out of their depth.

Goals from Danny Drinkwater, Lee Martin, sub Nicky Ajose and an absolute screamer from Matt James sent Ole Solskjaer’s side through to a second consecutive LSC Final (against either Blackburn or Bolton) in some style, and there was further good news for Reds fans in the form of Wes Brown’s return to action after a long injury lay-off, the England defender completing nearly an hour at right-back.

Rochdale 1 United 4: Fantastic Fábio fires Reds into LSC semis

Rochdale Man Utd
Rochdale Reserves 1-4 Manchester United Reserves
Reidy 17 Fábio 26, 41, 48, missed pen 21
Welbeck 58

United’s reserve side roared into the semi-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup this afternoon after resoundingly beating Rochdale 4-1 at Spotland. The defending champions took a while to find their feet and fell behind early on to a Joe Reidy header, but that goal only served to spark the Reds into life as Fábio da Silva well and truly took centre-stage. When the little Brazilian left-back missed a penalty he had won shortly after the home side’s opener, he could have been forgiven for letting his head drop…. instead, he went and scored a hattrick, two predatory finishes from close range book-ending a sublime volley after some breathtaking build-up play. When Danny Welbeck made it four before the hour mark it looked like Ole Solskjaer’s side could rack up a cricket score, only some fine goalkeeping and wasteful finishing keeping the scoreline vaguely respectable for the home team as United booked a semi-final date with Preston North End.

United 3 Accrington Stanley 0: Youthful reserves get LSC defence off to a comfortable start

Posted by nickogs20 on January 23, 2009

Man Utd Accrington Stanley
Manchester United Reserves 3-0 Accrington Stanley Reserves
Macheda 4
Brandy 19
Petrucci 51

Yes, you’re not seeing things – United’s reserve side actually took to the field yesterday afternoon, for the first time in a month, and just the third time in the last 9 weeks. Accrington Stanley were the visitors to The Cliff, United’s famous former training ground in Salford, for this Lancashire Senior Cup first round tie as the Reds began the defence of the trophy they won in manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first competitive match in charge, back in July. Early goals from Kiko Macheda and Febian Brandy effectively killed the game off as a contest before the game was twenty minutes old, and a deserved gloss was added to the scoreline early in the second half when Davide Petrucci – fresh from a stunning brace for the academy last weekend – curled home a sublime free-kick.

A late, late goal from Danny Drinkwater decisively swung a topsy-turvy match in United’s favour and, in doing so, secured the Lancashire Senior Cup for the Reds and a first trophy in management for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Date confirmed for Lancashire Senior Cup Final

Posted by nickogs20 on June 16, 2008

Fixture congestion at the tail-end of last season (can we call it last season now the new fixtures are out?) forced the postponement of the 07/08 Lancashire Senior Cup Final until pre-season in 2008/09, and now we have a confirmed date. United’s reserves will bid to make it a belated cup double against their Liverpool counterparts on July 30th in what will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first ‘competitive’ game in charge. The game will be held at the County Ground in Leyland (regular home of Bolton’s second string), and the Reds will hope the three arranged friendlies prior to July 30th (as revealed here) will stand them in good stead as they challenge for more silverware.

LSC: Bolton Wanderers Reserves 1 Manchester United Reserves 2

Posted by nickogs20 on April 25, 2008

United’s second string secured their place in another cup final after coming from behind to overcome a stubborn Bolton side who refused to buckle even when reduced to ten men early on. Defender James Sinclair saw red after just 17 minutes – Federico Macheda raced clear and bore down on goal only to be tripped by Sinclair, who gave the referee no option but to dismiss him. United’s subsequent freekick was wasted and instead it was Bolton who took the initiative, responding admirably to the setback of going a man down and taking the lead after 20 minutes through skipper Rob Sissons. Ron-Robert Zieler in the United goal was powerless to stop the midfielder’s crisp drive.

United were stung into action however and didn’t give the hosts the chance to settle into a rearguard effort. Just six minutes later Danny Drinkwater was on target with a great strike which Bolton keeper Brocklehurst did extremely well to keep out – unfortunately for him the in-form Chris Eagles was on hand to steer home the rebound and restore parity. Bolton’s best chance of a result had probably slipped through their fingers with such a quick response, and the Reds wasted little time capitalising further. Just after the half-hour mark David Gray found space down the right and fizzed across a peach of a centre which the predatory Macheda couldn’t miss.

That double salvo predictably saw Bolton heads drop and the prospect of them getting back on terms always looked a slim one. Drinkwater, Séan Evans and Danny Galbraith all spurned chances to rubber-stamp United’s passage into the final as the visitors controlled the remainder of the game, although Bolton – to their credit – kept going until the last and gave the Reds’ defence a few nervy moments late on. Those scares thankfully came to nothing and it’s United who progress to the Lancashire Senior Cup final to face either Liverpool or Accrington Stanley – date and venue as yet unknown.

Gray – Cathcart – Chester – Cleverley
Eagles – Hewson – Drinkwater – Possebon – S. Evans

Subs: Galbraith (for Eagles 61), James (for S. Evans 61), C. Evans, Eikrem, Amos

Scorers: Eagles 26, Macheda 32

Match reports are also available from both the United and Bolton official sites.
