Posted by nickogs20 on September 3, 2009

As ever during international breaks, the main focus of fans and media is on the many United first-teamers away representing their countries in the next week or so (an alarming 16 away with senior national sides this time around), but there’s an equally lengthy list of young players in action in various age groups and competitions to keep track of. Here’s a quick rundown on who, where and when…

Posted by nickogs20 on August 14, 2009

The much-maligned early season international fixtures may frustrate and worry club managers and fans alike, but they do offer a valuable opportunity for a number of young players across the continent and the globe to take the first steps towards establishing themselves in various age-group national teams for the long season ahead. World Cups at senior and youth level, the annual European finals at U19 and U17 level, another round of Euro U21 qualification – it all starts again here, and unsurprisingly there was plenty of United involvement over the past couple of days.

Spain defeat sends Brady’s Ireland home pointless

Posted by nickogs20 on May 10, 2008

Already elimited from the U17 European Championships, the Republic of Ireland succumbed to a third straight group stage defeat, going down 3-1 to holders and tournament favourites Spain. The Irish took the lead through Conor Hourihane but were eventually sunk by a brace from Barcelona starlet Ruben Rochina.

Still nursing an injury picked up in Ireland’s opening match with France, Robbie Brady again started from the bench. He replaced Gavin Gunning on 57 minutes and was heavily involved in the remainder of the game, twice coming close to pulling a goal back for his side. Brady will return home with the rest of the Irish party in the next couple of days disappointed with the way results went but hopefully all the better for the experience of tournament football.

Brady bunch crash out

Posted by nickogs20 on May 8, 2008

United’s representation at the UEFA U17 European Championship finals will come to an end on Sunday as a second consecutive defeat for Robbie Brady’s Ireland side saw them eliminated from the competition. A 1-0 reverse against Switzerland means the Irish cannot now progress to the semi-finals, and they will go into Sunday’s final group game against Spain with only pride to play for.

Brady only played the final 20 minutes of the match against the Swiss – the muscle injury that forced him off in the Republic’s opener not having quite recovered enough for the winger to be able to start. Brady was introduced on the hour mark as Ireland boss Sean McCaffrey desperately tried to help his side find the goal that would cancel out the Gavin Gunning own goal that had given the Swiss the lead 10 minutes earlier and prolong Ireland’s participation in the tournament, but despite a couple of near-misses late on, it wasn’t to be.

Robbie’s injury had been symptomatic of an Ireland campaign severely hamstrung by injuries. “It’s a big setback but the players have learned a lot from this tournament, and we have learned as an association.” McCaffrey told uefa.com. “But three or four of these lads are good enough to go into the U19 squad next year – Gearoid Morrissey, Robbie Brady, Daniel Joyce. We want to try and beat Spain and go away with a good taste in our mouths”. Positive news for the United youngster after a disappointing week so far.
