United’s reserves made it two wins from two in this year’s Manchester Senior Cup with a hard-fought win over Oldham Athletic.

While the performance left something to be desired, there was lots to be pleased about in the form of fine goals from Nicky Ajose and Federico Macheda, yet another comeback victory and important stepping stones on the road back to full fitness for Anderson, Wes Brown and, most notably, Rio Ferdinand, who completed 45 minutes on his comeback from the knee injury that ruled him out of the World Cup.

Everton 0 United 1: Clean sheet for the returning VDS as Kiko sends Reds clear at the top

Much of the focus at Widnes’ rain-lashed Halton Stadium this evening was on the return of Edwin van der Sar from injury, but on a night when neither keeper really had to break sweat, it was Kiko Macheda who stole the headlines and plaudits with a second-half winner that sent United’s Reserves three points clear at the top of the Premier Reserve League North.

After a first half that saw neither side manage to register a shot on target, Macheda made the crucial breakthrough ten minutes after the interval after Everton’s well-marshalled defence was finally prised open by the excellent Magnus Eikrem. With the returning van der Sar largely a spectator, that solitary strike was enough to hand the Reds a fourth win out of five games and an outright lead at the top of the table.

United 4 Sunderland 0: Black Cats have no answer to the awesome norsemen

King 24, 78

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reserves got back to winning ways in sensational style at Moss Lane this evening, a brace apiece for Magnus Eikrem and Joshua King handing the Reds an emphatic 4-0 victory over last season’s champions Sunderland.

The frustrating defeat against Liverpool last time out asked a few questions of this United second string, but early dominance suggested answers would soon be forthcoming. Eikrem’s 9th minute freekick got the Reds up and running, and he added another great strike from distance just after the half-hour to sandwich a cool finish from fellow Norwegian Joshua King and hand his side a 3-0 half-time advantage. The irrepressible King added a fourth goal ten minutes from time, ensuring a scoreline that truly reflected his team’s superiority.

Liverpool 1 United 0: Reds disappoint as 10-man Pool take deserved win

United’s unbeaten start to the season was ended in frustrating fashion at Prenton Park this evening, a Liverpool side reduced to ten men just after the half-hour mark managing to hang onto a 1-0 lead handed to them by David N’gog inside the first five minutes.

Sloppy defending allowed N’gog to pounce on a long ball and wrong-foot Ron-Robert Zieler in the United goal, and a strong Reds second-string struggled to get a foothold in the match as Liverpool controlled the first half-hour. A dubious red card for Damian Plessis then threatened to turn the game on its head, but while Ole Solskjaer’s side dominated possession thereafter and eventually fashioned several decent chances, an equaliser wasn’t to be forthcoming and a first reserve league defeat since March couldn’t be avoided.

Posted by nickogs20 on September 3, 2009

As ever during international breaks, the main focus of fans and media is on the many United first-teamers away representing their countries in the next week or so (an alarming 16 away with senior national sides this time around), but there’s an equally lengthy list of young players in action in various age groups and competitions to keep track of. Here’s a quick rundown on who, where and when…

United 1 Bolton 0: More silverware for Solskjaer thanks to late Macheda winner

United’s reserves have retained the Lancashire Senior Cup after Kiko Macheda’s winner four minutes from time settled a tense, closely-contested final at the County Ground in Leyland this evening.

With the game seemingly destined for penalties, the Reds’ Italian striker soared to meet Magnus Eikrem’s right-wing freekick and crash a great header against the crossbar before reacting quickest to nod home the rebound in predatory fashion, clinching an 11th LSC triumph in the club’s history.
