Milk Cup – Highlights from the first two games

Posted by nickogs20 on July 30, 2008

Video highlights from the Reds’ first two Milk Cup games are now available.

Click here for highlights of the opening day 4-0 win over Otago, courtesy of the BBC. Goals are from Federico Macheda (a header from Chris Curran’s right-wing cross), Evandro Brandão (a smart finish from Davide Petrucci’s clever flick), Nicky Ajose (another far post header from a Norwood freekick) and Ollie Norwood.

Meanwhile, here are the highlights from yesterday’s 4-0 win over County Armagh:

Goals in this one are from Joshua King (a far post header from Matty James’ cross), Matty James (a simple finish after a low cross from Zeki Fryers) and two from Federico Macheda (the latter after a fine run from King).

We should have full line-ups for these games up over the course of the next couple of days, as well as highlights of the Reds’ remaining games.

Strong Reds squad off to winning start at the Milk Cup

Posted by nickogs20 on July 29, 2008

Milk CupUnited got off to a flying start at the 2008 Northern Ireland Milk Cup, comfortably defeating New Zealand side Otago FC 4-0 at the showgrounds in Limavady. With a lack of live coverage of the game, details are somewhat scarce and no team line-up is available as yet, but we do know that United’s four goals (two in each half) were scored by Federico Macheda, Evandro Brandão, Nicky Ajose and Ollie Norwood. Highlights of the game will apparently be shown on BBCi (the BBC’s interactive service) tomorrow after noon, we’ll try and get more details up on that when they become available.

We also know the squad United have taken over to Northern Ireland, and a formidable one it is. No numbers yet but the players involved, including a certain Italian who will be of interest to many (aside from Macheda of course) are the following:

Goalkeepers: Conor Devlin

Defenders: Cameron Stewart, Reece Brown, Scott Wootton, ??????? Cooney, Nicky Jackson, Zeki Fryers

Midfielders: Matty James, Ollie Norwood, Jack Dean, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Davide Petrucci, Chris Curran, Robbie Brady

Forwards: Nicky Ajose, Federico Macheda, Joshua King, Evandro Brandão

The presence of Davide Petrucci will grab the headlines (well, if youth football ever really ‘grabs headlines’) and it’ll certainly be interesting to get a first glimpse of him this week. The mysterious ‘Cooney’ is quite possibly Oldham Athletic academy centre-half Stephen Cooney – Oldham took part in an unpublicised tournament at Carrington last week and it would seem feasible that we have taken the player on trial (thanks to Joe for the info).

All in all it’s a really exciting squad, with a number of notable second year scholars supported by all the new first years and some really promising U16’s – the much-hyped Tunnicliffe and Fryers in particular. United play County Armagh in their second game tomorrow knowing a win will ensure progress into the knockout stages of the Milk Cup proper, but Armagh are no pushovers – they only narrowly lost 2-1 earlier today to last year’s champions Fluminense. The game is another 7pm kick-off, this time at the Coleraine Showgrounds.

You can view a couple of pictures from the Otago game and all relevant tournament info on the Milk Cup’s official site.
