Joy for James as England sneak into the semis

Posted by nickogs20 on July 25, 2010

Late, late drama in both Group A matches has seen England qualify for the semi-finals of the UEFA U19 European Championship in unlikely fashion and prolonged the participation of United duo Matt James and Reece Brown for at least another few days.

Posted by nickogs20 on July 18, 2010

Hot on the heels of a United triumvirate playing their part in England’s success at the UEFA U17 European Championships, Matt James and Reece Brown will be attempting to emulate that achievement when the U19 version of the tournament gets underway later today.

Posted by nickogs20 on June 27, 2009

As England get set for a European final against Germany at Under-21 level, Brian Eastick’s Under-19’s are preparing to launch their own bid to become age group champions of the continent in Ukraine next month. Four United youngsters will be part of the squad, with Eastick today selecting Ben Amos, Danny Drinkwater, Matt James and Danny Welbeck in his 18-man travelling party.

Posted by nickogs20 on June 4, 2009

United midfielders Matt James and Danny Drinkwater have played key roles as England’s U19 side secured qualification for the summer’s U19 European Championships with three wins from three in their Elite Qualifying Round this past week.

European glory for Zieler… but what next?

Posted by nickogs20 on July 29, 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Patrice Evra, Edwin van der Sar – all dreamt of becoming champions of Europe with their country this summer, but it’s Ron-Robert Zieler who has become the only United player to achieve that feat after helping his Germany side to the European U19 title in the Czech Republic on Saturday night.

Three wins from three sees Zieler’s Germany march into the Euro U19 semis

Posted by nickogs20 on July 21, 2008

They’d already secured qualification from Group A but Ron-Robert Zieler’s Germany U19 side advanced to a semi-final date with the Czech Republic in style after overcoming Hungary 2-1 in Pribram.

Both nations were already sure of progressing so the only things at stake were top spot in the group and a 100% record, and perhaps wary of the fate that befell teams who rested their stars for the final group game when already qualified at Euro 2008, Germany made just the two changes, retaining RRZ in goal. Stefan Reinartz gave Germany a first-half lead, and although András Simon levelled things up with quarter of an hour to go with a powerful header past Zieler, the German lead was restored just two minutes later by Marcel Risse and Horst Hrubesch’s side held on for the win. The semi-final clash with the Czechs is next up on Wednesday evening in the city of Mestský.

One other piece of Euro U19’s news – England may have bowed out of the tournament yesterday but their (ultimately in vain) victory over Greece was enough to book them a place in next year’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup. The likes of Ben Amos, Danny Drinkwater and Danny Welbeck will all be strong contenders to make the squad for the tournament, which will be held in Egypt next September.

News roundup – Winning start for Zieler; Trio turn pro; Burnley keen on Eagles; Mixed fortune for four seeking new clubs

Posted by nickogs20 on July 15, 2008

Few snippets of news from the past few days that you may (or indeed may not) have missed…

~ United’s sole representative at the U19 Euros got off to a winning start in Plzen this evening as Ron-Robert Zieler’s Germany side overcame the holders and favourites Spain 2-1 in their opening group match. Zieler was preferred to Energie Cottbus’ Tom Mickel in goal and had little to do as Spain laboured in attack. In contrast, the young Germans built a deserved 2-0 lead with goals early in each half from Richard Sukuta-Pasu and Ömer Toprak, and had enough in the tank to comfortably hold on even after Zieler was beaten by a Jordi Alba strike midway through the second period.

Germany’s shock win will have raised hopes of success in a tournament they have never won, and their next game is on Thursday evening against Bulgaria. News on that (and more specifically RRZ’s involvement) in due course.

England get Euro U19 campaign underway minus an injured Danny Welbeck; Zieler now United’s only representative

Posted by nickogs20 on July 14, 2008

As I write, England are in action against the Czechs in the opening game of the 2008 U19 European Championships, but Danny Welbeck isn’t there in Jablonec with them after an injury forced the 17 year-old striker to withdraw from the squad on the eve of the tournament.

The exact nature of the injury hasn’t been revealed as yet, but while rumours suggest there is no long-term problem, a decision had to be made on Friday regarding the young Mancunian’s availability for the two week tournament with the squad set to depart for the Czech Republic the following day. Clearly it was decided that Danny wouldn’t be able to participate fully and coach Brian Eastick turned to his standby list for a replacement.

Ironically, that replacement was very nearly Danny’s United team-mate (and indeed school-mate) Febian Brandy. Brandy was part of the squad at the U19’s three day training camp last week and was one of two options Eastick deliberated over, the other being Bolton’s Tope Obadeyi.

“Both Tope and Febian Brandy looked very good at the three day training camp we had last week. When Daniel was withdrawn, it was a difficult decision for me who to take between Febian or Tope. I brought Tope in primarily because there is a slight doubt about Daniel Sturridge so if he were to deteriorate in the next two or three days then at least we have a similar type of forward here to come in. But it is nice to have the quality of these players on standby.”

That leaves just one United player as a participant in the tournament, Germany’s Ron-Robert Zieler. The young goalkeeper is competing for the starting role with Energie Cottbus’ Tom Mickel, with Germany kicking off their campaign against Spain this evening (6.30pm BST) in a match that is being screened live on Eurosport.

Contrasting emotions for United teammates as England squad finalised for Euro U19 finals

Posted by nickogs20 on July 2, 2008

As we reported a fortnight ago, Danny Welbeck and Ben Amos both recieved call-ups to the provisional England squad for the upcoming U19 European Championships, and faced a nervous wait until the announcement of the final 18-man party. That announcement has been made today, and there’s good news and bad news.

The good news is that, as expected, Danny Welbeck will be part of the 18 making the trip to the Czech Republic next week. Welbeck was a key player for the U18’s last season under coach Brian Eastick, who is also in charge of the U19’s, and there was never any real doubts over his inclusion in the final squad. The bad news is that Ben Amos misses out, as was widely feared. Ben was competing with Spurs’ David Button for the role of back-up to Middlesbrough keeper Jason Steele, and Button’s previous experience at U19 level and in senior league football has earned him the nod. It’s a disappointing start to the new season for the young United custodian but there is a potential upside – with Ron-Robert Zieler likely to travel with the first-team on their South Africa tour as back-up to Ben Foster (in the absence of Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak, vacationing and injured respectively), Amos will get the opportunity to stake a claim for the Reserves’ #1 jersey in the run of friendlies over the next few weeks.

England’s first game in the tournament is a clash with the host on Monday week, a match that will be shown live on Eurosport for those wishing to follow Danny Welbeck’s progress. We’ll have full coverage of Danny’s participation in the tournament here on United Youth.

Amos, Welbeck named in provisional England Euro U19 squad

Posted by nickogs20 on June 18, 2008

England Under-19 head coach Brian Eastick has named a provisional 23 man squad ahead of the upcoming U19 European Championships, and United duo Ben Amos and Danny Welbeck are in. The squad will be trimmed down to a final travelling party of 18 for the tournament (being held in the Czech Republic), and while Welbeck should be a shoo-in to make the final cut, Amos faces a nervous wait. Middlesbrough keeper Jason Steele looks odds-on to be first choice, which leaves the United stopper competing with his Spurs counterpart David Button for the back-up role. Button has the advantage of having featured for the U19’s previously and having played at senior level (albeit making only one solitary appearance for Grays Athletic), but Amos’ strong end of season form and impressive display for the England U18’s against Austria may stand him in good stead.

The final squad of 18 will be announced nearer to the tournament’s start date of July 14th. You can view the full provisional squad here.
