England Under-17 call-up for United youngster

Posted by nickogs20 on June 19, 2008

In addition to having two players in the provisional England U19 squad for the U19 Euros, United have a representative in the U17 squad named today by head coach John Peacock for the 2008 Nordic Tournament – 15 year-old Jesse Lingard. The diminutive forward is something of a surprise inclusion having not featured previously for the U16’s (as most of the squad named today have), but the eight-team tournament will be a great chance for the youngster to establish himself in the international set-up and gain valuable experience. Lingard’s United team-mates Ryan Tunnicliffe and Zeki Fryers are surprising absentees from the squad – having been regulars for the U16’s last season – but injury news is extremely hard to come by for players at U16 level and it’s entirely possible they miss out for that reason.

The Nordic Tournament will be held in Sweden between July 28th and August 2nd, and England will face Finland, Iceland and Norway in the group stage. More details on thefa.com here.
