U18s: United 2 Crewe 2 – Clinical Keane earns Reds a deserve share of the spoils

W Keane 83 Oswell 62

A late equaliser from Will Keane salvaged a deserved point for United and kept the Reds on top of Academy League Group C after bogey side Crewe Alexandra had threatened to win at Carrington for the fourth season in a row.

Nicky Ajose’s fine early strike had got the Reds off to the perfect start but, in keeping with what was to be an open and end-to-end encounter, the visitors levelled twelve minutes later through Michael Koral. While United began to assert their dominance in the second half, it was the Railwaymen who took the lead via the head of Jason Oswell, and Paul McGuinness’ side had to rely on top scorer Keane to save the day with a typically cool finish seven minutes from time.

Crewe 2 United 1: Under-18s are dominant but defeated as Pogba makes debut

Crewe Man Utd
Crewe Alexandra U18s 2-1 Manchester United U18s
Oswell 48, 66 W. Keane 90

It’ll take some time for Paul McGuinness and his young charges to work out exactly how they contrived to lose at Gresty Road this morning. In essence the answer is a relatively simple one – they struggled to create genuine chances and couldn’t convert the ones they did engineer, while their opponents Crewe Alexandra had no such problems. Nonetheless, to lose a game after dominating possession and territory to the extent the Reds did today and still fall to defeat is a definite headscratcher.

United had by far the best of a scoreless first-half but were caught cold early in the second 45 as Crewe’s big #9 Jason Oswell glanced home a devilish cross, and while McGuinness’ side continued to dominate and probe for goals of their own, they were caught by another sucker punch with 25 minutes remaining as Oswell bagged his second in spectacular fashion. The young Reds battled on gamely but were frustrated by Crewe’s resolute backline and the excellent Daniel Platt in goal, only eventually making a breakthrough in injury time through Will Keane, whose tap-in was ultimately merely a consolation goal.

Crewe 2 United 3: Dream return for Galbraith as U18s return to winning ways

Titchiner 26, 62 Brandão 16

Galbraith 85

After successive defeats to Manchester City and Stoke, United U18s re-found their form to pick up their eighth win in eleven away matches this season and avenge their loss to today’s opponents Crewe at Carrington back in October. The Reds left it late but undeniably deserved all three points at Alexandra Park, and the way in which they were secured was particularly pleasing, Danny Galbraith marking his return from hellish injury problems by scoring the winner five minutes from time. United had earlier taken the lead twice through goals from Evandro Brandão and Ryan Tunnicliffe, only to be pegged back both times by strikes from Crewe striker Alex Titchiner.

Macheda magic in vain as U18s slump to first defeat

United’s U18s were brought back down to earth with a bang at Carrington this morning as their fine start to the season was stopped in its tracks by an impressive Crewe outfit who frustrated the Reds for long periods before grabbing two decisive goals on the break. Shoddy defending and a poor final ball were hallmarks of United’s play all game and a typically well-taken goal from substitute Kiko Macheda was too little too late for Paul McGuinness’ side.
