Young Reds on international duty

Posted by nickogs20 on September 2, 2008

Danny WelbeckAll the focus from most United fans this international break will be on the senior players in action in World Cup Qualifiers (including a certain striker for Bulgaria…), but there are a number of youngsters also joining up with their countries over the next ten days.

News roundup – Winning start for Zieler; Trio turn pro; Burnley keen on Eagles; Mixed fortune for four seeking new clubs

Posted by nickogs20 on July 15, 2008

Few snippets of news from the past few days that you may (or indeed may not) have missed…

~ United’s sole representative at the U19 Euros got off to a winning start in Plzen this evening as Ron-Robert Zieler’s Germany side overcame the holders and favourites Spain 2-1 in their opening group match. Zieler was preferred to Energie Cottbus’ Tom Mickel in goal and had little to do as Spain laboured in attack. In contrast, the young Germans built a deserved 2-0 lead with goals early in each half from Richard Sukuta-Pasu and Ömer Toprak, and had enough in the tank to comfortably hold on even after Zieler was beaten by a Jordi Alba strike midway through the second period.

Germany’s shock win will have raised hopes of success in a tournament they have never won, and their next game is on Thursday evening against Bulgaria. News on that (and more specifically RRZ’s involvement) in due course.

United forward set to star for England at upcoming European Championships

Posted by nickogs20 on June 3, 2008

Action Images / Lee SmithYep, you have read that right. Granted, it’s the UEFA U19 European Championships, but still… England are through the finals, to be held in the Czech Republic between the 14th and the 26th of July, and barring injuries Danny Welbeck should be a part of the squad.

Welbeck was a part of the group that travelled to Belarus last week for the Elite Qualifying Round. The young Mancunian striker watched the 2-0 win against Poland (West Ham’s Freddie Sears scoring both goals) and the 1-0 victory over Serbia (Reading midfielder James Henry with the winner) from the bench, unable to break up the strike partnership of Sears and Newcastle’s Andy Carroll, but played practically the full ninety minutes (only being replaced in injury time at the end of the game) in the vital 0-0 draw with Belarus that secured England’s place in the finals.

England have been drawn with Italy, Greece and the hosts Czech Republic in Group B, which will be based in the city of Liberec. The Czech capital Prague will stage the games in Group A, which contains Germany, Spain, Hungary and Bulgaria. Welbeck will in all likelihood be United’s sole representative at the finals, although Danny Drinkwater and Ben Amos must be considered outside chances to join him in the England squad and Federico Macheda is a long shot to be called up by Italy. One implication of Welbeck’s likely presence at the finals will be the youngster missing out on the opportunity to travel with the first team on tour to South Africa and Nigeria, although the tremendous experience tournament football offers should outweigh any negatives there.

Eurosport will have extensive coverage of the finals on both television and their website, and you’ll find any relevant news, squad announcements and match previews and reports on United Youth in due course.

BlueStars Day 1

Posted by nickogs20 on May 1, 2008

A United under-20 squad featuring a mixture of reserve and academy players kicked off their campaign in the 2008 BlueStars FIFA Youth Cup in Zurich with games against Swiss side Grasshoppers Zurich and Villarreal of Spain. The Reds got off to a flying start in their mid-afternoon opener against Grasshoppers, running out 4-0 winners with goals from Federico Macheda, Sam Hewson (from the penalty spot), Daniel Galbraith and Joshua King. Ron-Robert Zieler also saved a second half penalty. The team lined up as follows:

Gray – Chester – Cathcart – Eckersley
Eikrem – Cleverley – Possebon – Hewson – Galbraith

Sub: King (for Macheda), James (for Hewson), Evans (for Possebon)
Scorers: Macheda 2, Hewson (pen) 6, Galbraith 25, King 35
Booked: Macheda

United’s next game was an early evening kick-off against Villarreal, who had earlier lost heavily at the hands of Partizan Belgrade. Any thoughts of this being a straightforward fixture were misplaced however, as the Spanish outfit edged a close game 1-0. United lined up as below:

Gray – Chester – Cathcart – Eckersley
Eikrem – Cleverley – Possebon – Hewson – Galbraith

Sub: King (for Eikrem)

United have two more group games tomorrow, facing current group leaders FC Basel at 10am and then Partizan Belgrade at 11.40am. They will then play-off against the team in the same position in the other group to decide overall placings (i.e. the two group winners will face each other to decide 1st/2nd, the two runners-up for 3rd/4th and so on). FYI, games are 40 minutes long (2 x 20 minute halves) apart from the final which will be 25 minutes each way.

Further information is available at the official tournament site.

Welbeck and Drinkwater on the mark for England

Posted by nickogs20 on April 18, 2008

History repeated itself at Victoria Park on Wednesday night as – for the second match in succession – goals from Danny Welbeck and Daniel Drinkwater gave England U18’s a 2-0 win. Austria were the opponents this time as England attempted to maintain their unbeaten record at this age level in 07-08, and they were soon behind as Welbeck prodded home the opener after ten minutes. Drinkwater curled home a late freekick to secure victory, while Ben Amos was in net for the first half and dealt capably with the rare threats on the England goal.

You can read a full match report on thefa.com, where you can also watch a video of the United duo’s goals.

Trio called up to England U18 squad

Danny Welbeck in England action (copyright thefa.com)

Ben Amos, Daniel Drinkwater and Danny Welbeck have been called up by England under-18 coach Brian Eastick for next Wednesday’s friendly with Austria at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Park home. Welbeck and Drinkwater were the scorers last time England U18 played (a 2-0 win over Ghana in November), while Amos has forced his way back into the international reckoning after missing last summer’s U17 World Cup with a dislocated shoulder. Under-18 friendlies are few and far between (only two a season for England) so this is a big opportunity for the United trio to put themselves into contention for the U19’s next season and the qualifying tournament for the 2009 U19 European Championships.

thefa.com have an interview with Danny Welbeck, reflecting on his interaction with the first team this season (particularly his spot on the bench alongside Rooney and Ronaldo against Roma last week) and his youth international career so far. You can read the article here.
