International roundup (11/12 August): Tošić at the double; Brandy/Cleverley stake claims for U20 World Cup; trio make U21 debuts

Posted by nickogs20 on August 14, 2009

The much-maligned early season international fixtures may frustrate and worry club managers and fans alike, but they do offer a valuable opportunity for a number of young players across the continent and the globe to take the first steps towards establishing themselves in various age-group national teams for the long season ahead. World Cups at senior and youth level, the annual European finals at U19 and U17 level, another round of Euro U21 qualification – it all starts again here, and unsurprisingly there was plenty of United involvement over the past couple of days.

England get Euro U19 campaign underway minus an injured Danny Welbeck; Zieler now United’s only representative

Posted by nickogs20 on July 14, 2008

As I write, England are in action against the Czechs in the opening game of the 2008 U19 European Championships, but Danny Welbeck isn’t there in Jablonec with them after an injury forced the 17 year-old striker to withdraw from the squad on the eve of the tournament.

The exact nature of the injury hasn’t been revealed as yet, but while rumours suggest there is no long-term problem, a decision had to be made on Friday regarding the young Mancunian’s availability for the two week tournament with the squad set to depart for the Czech Republic the following day. Clearly it was decided that Danny wouldn’t be able to participate fully and coach Brian Eastick turned to his standby list for a replacement.

Ironically, that replacement was very nearly Danny’s United team-mate (and indeed school-mate) Febian Brandy. Brandy was part of the squad at the U19’s three day training camp last week and was one of two options Eastick deliberated over, the other being Bolton’s Tope Obadeyi.

“Both Tope and Febian Brandy looked very good at the three day training camp we had last week. When Daniel was withdrawn, it was a difficult decision for me who to take between Febian or Tope. I brought Tope in primarily because there is a slight doubt about Daniel Sturridge so if he were to deteriorate in the next two or three days then at least we have a similar type of forward here to come in. But it is nice to have the quality of these players on standby.”

That leaves just one United player as a participant in the tournament, Germany’s Ron-Robert Zieler. The young goalkeeper is competing for the starting role with Energie Cottbus’ Tom Mickel, with Germany kicking off their campaign against Spain this evening (6.30pm BST) in a match that is being screened live on Eurosport.

Contrasting emotions for United teammates as England squad finalised for Euro U19 finals

Posted by nickogs20 on July 2, 2008

As we reported a fortnight ago, Danny Welbeck and Ben Amos both recieved call-ups to the provisional England squad for the upcoming U19 European Championships, and faced a nervous wait until the announcement of the final 18-man party. That announcement has been made today, and there’s good news and bad news.

The good news is that, as expected, Danny Welbeck will be part of the 18 making the trip to the Czech Republic next week. Welbeck was a key player for the U18’s last season under coach Brian Eastick, who is also in charge of the U19’s, and there was never any real doubts over his inclusion in the final squad. The bad news is that Ben Amos misses out, as was widely feared. Ben was competing with Spurs’ David Button for the role of back-up to Middlesbrough keeper Jason Steele, and Button’s previous experience at U19 level and in senior league football has earned him the nod. It’s a disappointing start to the new season for the young United custodian but there is a potential upside – with Ron-Robert Zieler likely to travel with the first-team on their South Africa tour as back-up to Ben Foster (in the absence of Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak, vacationing and injured respectively), Amos will get the opportunity to stake a claim for the Reserves’ #1 jersey in the run of friendlies over the next few weeks.

England’s first game in the tournament is a clash with the host on Monday week, a match that will be shown live on Eurosport for those wishing to follow Danny Welbeck’s progress. We’ll have full coverage of Danny’s participation in the tournament here on United Youth.

Amos, Welbeck named in provisional England Euro U19 squad

Posted by nickogs20 on June 18, 2008

England Under-19 head coach Brian Eastick has named a provisional 23 man squad ahead of the upcoming U19 European Championships, and United duo Ben Amos and Danny Welbeck are in. The squad will be trimmed down to a final travelling party of 18 for the tournament (being held in the Czech Republic), and while Welbeck should be a shoo-in to make the final cut, Amos faces a nervous wait. Middlesbrough keeper Jason Steele looks odds-on to be first choice, which leaves the United stopper competing with his Spurs counterpart David Button for the back-up role. Button has the advantage of having featured for the U19’s previously and having played at senior level (albeit making only one solitary appearance for Grays Athletic), but Amos’ strong end of season form and impressive display for the England U18’s against Austria may stand him in good stead.

The final squad of 18 will be announced nearer to the tournament’s start date of July 14th. You can view the full provisional squad here.
