Reds miss out on Ramsey

Posted by nickogs20 on June 11, 2008

Cardiff City’s 17 year old wonderkid Aaron Ramsey has turned down offers from United and Everton in favour of a move to Arsenal, with a £5m deal expected to go through in the next few days. Ramsey had been widely expected to move to Manchester, and losing out on his signature will be a bitter blow for Sir Alex Ferguson (not to mention an embarrassment to the club after an article on manutd.com last Monday appeared to practically announce the capture of the Welsh youngster). The instinctive reaction of most fans in this situation, when a transfer target opts to sign for a rival club, is to feign indifference (“His loss, player x in the reserves is a better prospect anyway”) or blame financial motives, but it’s worth considering just why Ramsey, supposedly a lifelong United fan, might have turned us down.

News: Heaton’s big chance; Fraizer’s big day; Ole’s assistant revealed

Posted by nickogs20 on May 24, 2008

Tom HeatonJust a few stories from the last couple of glorious days…

* As has been rumoured over the last week, Tom Heaton will spend next season on loan at Cardiff City (official site confirmation here). It’s a big chance for the England U21 stopper to make a name for himself and get regular competitive football, and will also allow Ron-Robert Zieler and Ben Amos to get more games for the reserves next year. You’ll note Dave Jones’ comments in that official site article about the relationship between the two clubs – word of Heaton’s loan move to Ninian Park first reached me about a week ago, with the talk being that Heaton and one other young reserve player (Chris Eagles thought to be the likely candidate) would join Cardiff on loan for next season as part of the deal to bring the Bluebirds’ 17 year old wonderkid Aaron Ramsey to United. First part of that has come true, we’ll have to wait and see about the rest.

* Tomorrow sees Wembley host what has been dubbed ‘the richest game in football’ – the Championship Playoff Final between Hull City and Bristol City. It will be the biggest game in the short career of United striker Fraizer Campbell, who has been a revelation this season for Hull. You can catch the game on Sky Sports from 3pm tomorrow – here’s hoping Fraizer can fire the Tigers into the Premier League.

* An interesting quote from this Guardian article about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s promotion to reserve team manager that might go unnoticed by many in the midst of some typical Fergie comments:

“Solskjaer will run United’s reserve team next season alongside Warren Joyce, who is returning from a coaching role with Royal Antwerp, with Brian McClair becoming the full-time director of the club’s youth academy.”

The last part confirms what I speculated the other day when writing about Ole’s new role, while the first part would also appear to confirm Jimmy Ryan’s return to solely operating as Director of Youth Football. Warren Joyce seems a sensible choice (apologies for the rhyme) to assist Ole in his first management role – it will be interesting to see what implications this has for Antwerp and United’s continuing relationship with them.

Apologies for the paucity of updates these past few days, events in Moscow have rather dominated the week! Normal service should be resumed from now on.
