High on confidence after six straight wins and impressive Youth Cup progress against Birmingham and Burnley, United’s U18s were brought crashing back down to earth at Ewood Park, as a 3-0 reverse saw them exit this year’s competition at the fifth round stage.

Whilst Blackburn were flattered somewhat by a scoreline that scarcely reflected a match that had been even and closely-fought for the most part, there’s no doubt that Rovers deserved to go through. The first goal was always going to be crucial, and it went to the hosts just before the break, Jason Lowe capitalising on some slack defending from a controversially-awarded corner. Paul McGuinness’ side fell further behind twenty minutes from time as Rovers skipper Grant Hanley doubled his side’s lead, and when Conor Devlin saved a late penalty only to see Lowe net the rebound, the Reds knew it wasn’t to be their day.

Too many missed chances, especially in the first half, on a miserable wet night. Pies were good though….
