Next up in the Youth Cup… Burnley

Posted by nickogs20 on December 15, 2009

Having dispatched Birmingham City in a tough Third Round encounter, United have been drawn away to Burnley in round four of this year’s FA Youth Cup.

Goals from Paul Pogba and Nicky Ajose (and a terrific penalty save from Conor Devlin) last Thursday night secured United’s place among the last 32 teams standing and the reward is a short trip north to face the Clarets, who progressed with a 4-1 win away to Scunthorpe United, thanks to a goal apiece from prolific left-winger Michael King and strike duo Liam Newman and Dominic Knowles, with an own goal completing the scoring. Terry Pashley’s youth side play their football in the North West Alliance rather than the Premier Academy League, so will be facing a big step up in class when they take on the Reds.

Fourth round ties are to be played by January 16th 2010, with this one likely to take place at Burnley’s Turf Moor stadium, already the venue for one miserable United defeat this season. Other notable ties at this stage include Liverpool’s trip to face Leicester City, arguably the most impressive side in the academy league this season, and holders Arsenal (if they get through their delayed third round encounter with Crewe, due to be played tomorrow) playing host to Ipswich Town, who have already beaten the young Gunners at U18 level this season.

We’ll bring you news of the time/date/venue for United’s clash with Burnley as soon as it’s made public.
