New deal for Danny

Hot on the heels of tieing down Federico Macheda to a new long-term contract last week, United have handed fellow teen striker Danny Welbeck a new deal committing him to the club until the summer of 2013.
After starring for both United’s academy side and England U17s as a schoolboy, Longsight-born Welbeck signed trainee forms in 2007 and, after seamlessly stepping up to reserve level, was knocking on the door of the first-team after just a year as an apprentice. The talented frontman was duly awarded a first professional contract in the summer of 2008 and has gone from strength to strength since, netting three goals for the first team last season (including a stunning strike on his league debut vs Stoke) and another two already this campaign.
A confident and infectious character, the 19 year-old has been earmarked by Sir Alex Ferguson as an outsider to make England’s World Cup squad for next summer’s finals in South Africa. The U21 international is probably still some way off a senior call-up in reality, but now firmly established as a member of the Reds’ first-team squad, Danny looks destined to have a bright future with his boyhood club and a national side crying out for quality strikers.
Speaking to the official club website, Sir Alex Ferguson said:
“We are delighted. We see Danny as one of the great young players who has emerged from the academy. He will have a terrific career and we are glad that he has placed his trust in us with his future.”
Danny Welbeck said:
“I am really happy, there was never a doubt that this is where I want to be. I am enjoying every minute and learning so much from all the great players that are here. I would like to thank Sir Alex, the club and the fans for all their support.”
