Posted by nickogs20 on September 3, 2009

As ever during international breaks, the main focus of fans and media is on the many United first-teamers away representing their countries in the next week or so (an alarming 16 away with senior national sides this time around), but there’s an equally lengthy list of young players in action in various age groups and competitions to keep track of. Here’s a quick rundown on who, where and when…

England U21
Who: Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley
When/Where: UEFA Euro U21 Qualifiers vs Macedonia away (4/9/09 in Prilep) and Greece away (8/9/09, Tripoli)
More Info: Cleverley’s first U21 callup reflects brilliant start to the season with United & Watford. Welbeck has two U21 caps. Full squad and further info here.

Italy U21
Who: Federico Macheda
When/Where: UEFA Euro U21 Qualifiers vs Wales away (4/9/09 in Swansea) and Luxembourg at home (8/9/09 in Novara)
More Info: Kiko’s looking for a competitive U21 debut after his first Azzurini appearance vs Russia last month. Squad/itinerary details (in Italian) here.

Northern Ireland U21
Who: Craig Cathcart
When/Where: UEFA Euro U21 Qualifiers vs Czech Republic away (4/9/09 in Jablonec) and Iceland at home (8/9/09 in Coleraine)
More Info: Cathcart deemed fit enough to travel despite apparently failing Newcastle medical. Corry Evans a surprise absentee, Ollie Norwood yet to recieve clearance to play competitive for NI (having already done so for England at U17 level). Squad details here.

Scotland U21
Who: David Gray
When/Where: UEFA Euro U21 Qualifier vs Austria away (5/9/09 in Maria Enzersdorf)
More Info: Gray looking for a second U21 cap. Full squad here.

Serbia U21
Who: Adem Ljajić
When/Where: UEFA Euro U21 Qualifiers vs Slovakia at home (5/9/09 in Vojvodina) and Norway away (9/9/09 in Fredrikstad)
More Info: Ljajić already has four U21 caps despite still being just 17.

England U19
Who: Reece Brown, Cameron Stewart, Matt James
When/Where: Friendly vs Russia at home (8/9/09 in Shrewsbury)
More Info: James retains his place from the summer’s European finals, while Stewart and Brown get first callups. Full squad can be found here.

Ireland U19
Who: Robbie Brady
When/Where: Four Nations Tournament vs Turkey, Holland and Portugal (5/8/09 to 8/9/09 in Dublin and Bray)
More Info: Brady’s terrific start to the season was always likely to bring a first U19 callup. Full squad here.

Ireland U17
Who: Sean McGinty
When/Where: Syrenka International Cup (30/8/09 to 5/9/09 in Łódź, Poland)
More Info: New signing McGinty was an U17 international regular whilst a schoolboy at Charlton last season. More details here.

In addition, a number of young Reds will be in action for their full national teams. Darron Gibson is likely to feature in midfield for Ireland in their World Cup qualifier vs Cyprus (5/9/09 in Nicosia) and friendly vs World Cup hosts South Africa (8/9/09 in Limerick), while Jonny Evans has put off an ankle operation in order to help Northern Ireland’s bid to qualify for the 2010 finals, which continues with clashes against Poland (5/9/09 in Chorzow) and Slovakia (9/9/09 in Belfast).

Further afield, Zoran Tošić joins Nemanja Vidic in the Serbia squad for their home qualifier against France on September 9th, and will be looking to build on his two-goal showing last time out against South Africa. Ritchie de Laet’s almost meteoric rise from obscurity continues apace meanwhile, with a first meaningful call-up for Belgium’s away qualifiers against Spain (5/9) and Armenia (9/9).
