United’s new-look Under-18 side were given a harsh lesson in the realities of academy league football this morning after dominating long spells of their opening day clash with Southampton and still conspiring to fall to a 3-1 defeat.

With Carrington bathed in sunshine, things looked bright for a team containing seven new scholars when they took an early lead through a superbly-crafted goal from Ryan Tunnicliffe, yet a disastrous start to the second half saw the pendulum swing firmly in the Saints’ direction, as costly defensive mistakes handed goals to Jordan Keegan and – from the penalty spot – Garyn Preen.

The Reds poured forward in search of an equaliser but the visitors’ defence held firm and Callum McNish produced the goal of the game on the counter attack to clinch all three points for the boys from the South Coast.

Only Sam Johnstone was making a first U18 appearance for the Reds, but six others were making their first appearance as full-timers, including front pairing John Cofie and Will Keane and central midfield duo Ryan Tunnicliffe and Ravel Morrison. Experience came in the form of Scott Wootton and Reece Brown in defence and fellow second-years Nicky Ajose and Robbie Brady on the wings, the latter taking the captain’s armband. The subs bench featured four more first-years and another potential one in the form of Michael Ngoo, still on trial from Southend.

Loses are tough but they are good learning lessons. Man U kicked major butt against Wigan 5-0.http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

Any idea why Pogba, Massacci or Fornasier weren’t even in the squad. I think I saw Pogba there so do you have any idea whether he is injured or admin problems or any other reasons he wouldn’t be playing?

apart from the usual (great) match reports, would it be possible to have your own view about the kids?

Its well and good having standards report, but maybe you should also sometimes post who is impressing you, who you think will make it ect… maybe some predictions who could make a macheda style jump. I’d put money on Morrison having some part in the Carling

I agree with maradona’s right foot(even though his left foot would have said it better)
