Pre-season schedule given a continental flavour

Posted by nickogs20 on June 19, 2009

In addition to the itinerary we brought to you a few days ago, United’s official site manutd.com has revealed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side will complete their pre-season preparations with games against Dutch side vv Katwijk and Royal Antwerp of Belgium.

Two days after taking on their landlords Altrincham at Moss Lane on Tuesday August 4th, the second string will take on vv Kalwijk at their De Krom ground. Katwijk, based in the western Netherlands coastal town of the same name, are an amateur side who play their football in the third tier of Dutch football, the Hoofdklasse, a league they have won on three occasions (most recently in 2000).

Four days later, on Monday August 10th, the Reds will travel west into Belgium to face more familiar opposition. Royal Antwerp are, of course, United’s affiliate club, and have taken a number of our promising youngsters on loan over the course of a partnership that has lasted over a decade now – the likes of John O’Shea, Jonny Evans, Fraizer Campbell and Darron Gibson have all spent productive spells with the Great Old.

The United first team were visitors to Bosuilstadion in 2005 for a friendly to mark RAFC’s 125th anniversary (a game that ended 6-1 to the Reds and featured a Ruud van Nistelrooy hattrick), and now Solskjaer’s reserves will follow suit, with the match against the EXQI League side likely to add even more difficulty to what was already looking like a challenging set of pre-season fixtures.

17/7/09 – AFC Fylde (a), 7.45pm
20/7/09 – Rochdale (a), 7.30pm
25/7/09 – Norwich City (a), 3pm
28/7/09 – Luton Town (a), 7.45pm
4/8/09 – Altrincham (a), 7.45pm
6/8/09 – vv Katwijk (a), 7.30pm
10/8/09 – Royal Antwerp (a), 7.30pm
17/8/09 – Bolton (n), 7.45pm

Very tough set of fixtures for the young lads. This should really get them into shape for the start of the season.
