United trio Danny Welbeck, Danny Drinkwater and Matt James have been named in Brian Eastick’s 18-man squad for England’s upcoming European U19 Championship Elite Qualifying Round.
The Young Lions will take on Bosnia, Scotland and Slovakia at the end of this month for a place at the tournament proper, to be held in Ukraine in late July and early August. The games are to be held in Yorkshire, with Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane, Bradford City’s Valley Parade and Doncaster Rovers’ Keepmoat Stadium playing host to the crucial fixtures.
Welbeck and Drinkwater have been key parts of Eastick’s U19 squad for most of the season, Welbeck even pushing on into the U21 reckoning earlier this year, and he in particular will be desperate to help England qualify for the Championships, having been forced to withdraw from the squad on the eve of last year’s tournament. James meanwhile recieves his first call-up for the U19s, having previous represented the national team at U16 and U17 level. A strong contender for this season’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, James has established himself as first-choice in midfield for the reserves, having started the season as captain of the U18s.
