Reserves back in competitive action as youthful squad travel to face Hull

Posted by nickogs20 on November 18, 2008

After nearly four weeks off, United’s Reserves return to league action tonight as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes a youthful squad to North Ferriby to face bottom of the table Hull City.

With Ben Amos, Danny Welbeck, Danny Drinkwater, Darron Gibson, Manucho and Corry Evans on international duty, Solskjaer has included a number of Academy players in his squad – Scott Wootton, Matty James, Cameron Stewart, Evandro Brandao, Kiko Macheda, Kenny Strickland and Davide Petrucci are all included, the latter two in line to make their reserve debuts for United.

In contrast, the Reds come up against a Hull side relatively packed with experience, the most notable inclusion being Dean Windass, who – at 39 years old – is basically twice the age of anyone in the United squad. Also included are former Bolton winger Stelios Giannakopoulos and midfielder Bryan Hughes, both with plenty of Premier League experience.

For Solskjaer, it’s a relief to be back in competitive action after three weeks without a meaningful game. “You can’t beat proper games – it’s always nice to prepare properly and come in your gear for a game. You get that little buzz”, admitted the Norwegian. For his assistant Warren Joyce, tonight marks a game against a club he both played 170 games for and guided to Football League survival as player-manager at the turn of the century.

The game is also an all-ticket sell-out at North Ferriby United’s Church Road ground, which holds just over 2000, quite probably the biggest crowd the reserves will play a league game in front of this season. It’s also live on MUTV, and we’ll have a full report up later.

United: Zieler, Johnstone; Derbyshire, Wootton, Chester, James, Strickland; Stewart, Possebon, Eikrem, Hewson, Cleverley, Petrucci; Brandao, Macheda, Bryan.
