Youth Cup draw pairs Reds with Chelsea

Posted by nickogs20 on November 7, 2008

ChelseaUnited have been drawn to face Chelsea at home in the third round of this season’s FA Youth Cup.

As with the FA Cup, the big boys enter at the third round stage and United vs Chelsea is one of two intriguing all-Premier League ties (Aston Villa vs Arsenal the other). Paul Clement’s Chelsea side ran eventual winners Manchester City close in last season’s final and, despite inconsistent form in the Academy League this season, would almost certainly have not been Paul McGuinness’ preferred choice of opponent at this early stage of the competition, but home advantage could be crucial.

The quality of the opposition and the interest the tie is likely to generate could well see the game staged at Old Trafford, the alternative being the ‘new’ home for the reserves, Altrincham’s Moss Lane. The game has to be held before December 13th – we’ll have news on a confirmed date and venue as soon as we get it, along with an in-depth preview as the Reds seek to make up for the disappointment of their early exit from last season’s competition.

We’re (Chelsea) struggling massively defensively but are firing on all cylinders going forward. Something in the region of 60 goals in our 11 academy games this season. I know the whole team wants to go that one step further this year, just a shame they’ve drawn a tough away game.

This should be a good test for the young lads. Home advantage will be a plus but i think we will do well. Watch out for Macheda and Petrucci et al…i’m sure they’ll give us a good show.

United are trying to play the game at Old Trafford but trying to sort out suitable dates with Chelsea AND the OT pitch being available are still being discussed.

The Second Round results don’t conclude for another ten days or so many fixtures won’t be organised for a while yet.

Matches have to be played by mid-December.

I’m not convinced home advantage has anything to say at this level, unless we can muster up massive support (doubt it!). Really not the best of draws, but hopefully this year’s lot can prove themselves better than the one who lost to Liverpool, and to do that, they have to beat everyone. Not quite sure they are better, though. We may have better individuals, but the team had a higher standard overall 2 years ago.

Dateline Friday 14th – Chelsea website has announced the date as Thursday 27th November 1900h ko at Old Trafford.

Possibly the Reserves game v.Middlesboro on that date at Alty will be cancelled. The official MUFC site is poor on Reserves / Acad stories at the moment.
