United stroll into the Milk Cup knockout stages

Posted by nickogs20 on July 29, 2008

Milk CupThe Reds’ U17 side this evening followed up their opening day 4-0 victory over Otago of New Zealand with a win by the same scoreline over County Armagh thanks to goals from Federico Macheda (2), Joshua King and Matty James – ensuring qualification for the Milk Cup ‘proper’ in the process. The emphatic win at the Coleraine Showgrounds will see the Reds play Cherry Orchard in the quarter-finals, with the game due to take place in Ballymoney at 6pm tomorrow.

Further details are scarce at the moment and there’ll be more to go on after seeing the highlights on BBCi tomorrow, but this set of pictures shows that Conor Devlin, Cam Stewart, Reece Brown, Scott Wootton, Nicky Ajose and Evandro Brandão all took part in the game (in addition to the aforementioned goalscorers).

In the meantime, I can reveal almost the full team that played in yesterday’s win over Otago:

1. Conor Devlin
2. Reece Brown
3. Cameron Stewart
4. Matty James
6. Ollie Norwood
7. Chris Curran
8. Davide Petrucci
9. Federico Macheda
10. Evandro Brandão
15. Nicky Ajose

That team is of course missing one player, who will be a centre-back – most likely Scott Wootton. Matty James wearing five is something of a guess, but he definitely started the game, and as skipper.

United’s goals in that game were a Macheda header from a Curran cross, a smart Brandão finish after a clever flick from Petrucci, an Ajose far post header from Norwood’s freekick and a long-range effort from Norwood himself. More to come on the Armagh game tomorrow, as well as news of the quarter-final clash with Cherry Orchard.
