With Wes Brown flying home yesterday after the tragic death of his sister and a number of first-teamers nursing slight knocks, Sir Alex has sent for reinforcements for the remainder of the Reds’ tour of Africa. Young reserves Rodrigo Possebon, Craig Cathcart and Tom Cleverley have flown out to the squad’s current base in the South African city of Pretoria ahead of Saturday’s final Vodacom Challenge match and the encounter with Portsmouth in Nigeria the following day.
Cathcart and Cleverley offer cover for the departing Brown at centre-back and right-back respectively, and Cleverley’s call-up in particular is reward for a huge improvement over the past 12 months, but it’s the dispatch of Rodrigo to SA that will be of real interest to most fans. The Brazilian had been highly tipped to go on tour originally and his stand-out performances in the reserves’ first two friendlies have only served to increase the buzz around the 19 year-old. With two matches in the space of 24 hours this weekend, we can expect to see most, if not all, of what is now a 23-man squad get some time on the pitch, and both games are live on MUTV (with the Vodacom Challenge match against either Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates also being shown by Setanta).
