Heaton targeting United number one shirt

Posted by nickogs20 on June 14, 2008

Tom HeatonWith Edwin van der Sar showing no signs of slipping quietly into retirement and Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster already jostling for position in the queue behind him, the chances of a young keeper gatecrashing that three-way contest to seize the #1 shirt himself seem remote – but Tom Heaton doesn’t see it that way. The 22 year old got a taste of first-team action as a non-playing squad member for some key games last season – not least the Champions League Final in Moscow – and wants more of it. What’s more, he believes the season he is about to spend on loan at Cardiff City can be the perfect stepping stone towards that goal.

“It would mean everything to become Manchester United’s number one,” Heaton told the South Wales Echo. “As soon as I first signed and started to play for United at under-12 level that was the goal I set out to achieve. Nothing has changed since then. My move to Cardiff City is another step towards that target – and it is in the back of my mind all the time”.

The England U21 stopper will compete with former Blackburn and Villa keeper Peter Enckelman for the starting job at Ninian Park next season and is looking forward to it. “Cardiff have huge ambition to challenge for promotion next season and they play good football. They are two of the main reasons I was keen to sign. First and foremost my aim is to be number one. I need to be playing. After that, once the season gets going, it’s to push for promotion”.
