Campbell, Simpson make first-team ambitions clear

Their current focus may be on helping guide their loan clubs to promotion and a place in the Premier League next season, but for Fraizer Campbell and Danny Simpson (presently on loan at Hull City and Ipswich Town respectively), there’s only one top-flight club they want to be turning out for in ’08/09 – United.

In an interview with United’s weekly email newsletter Red View (subscribers should have recieved it earlier today, others can read it on redcafe here), Campbell spoke fondly of his time with Hull this season. The striker has scored 15 goals and fired the Tigers into the Championship top three, and said “I couldn’t have asked for much more really. To come on loan, play most weeks and score goals has been perfect for me. I’ve really enjoyed myself and we’re doing really well in the league now, too – better than anybody expected. It would be perfect if we could finish the season off properly with promotion”.

Fraizer went on to praise the Hull coaching staff and his team-mates there, but when asked about where he considered his future to lie, the response was emphatic – “I’ve read that he (SAF) wants me back at United, and that’s always great to hear, so I’m just looking forward to reporting back for pre-season training at Carrington. I’d be daft not to want to have a go at playing for United’s first team. That’s exactly what I’ll try to do next season”. When quizzed about the current competition upfront at United and the possibility of summer signings in that position, the 20-year old was quick to quip “Yeah! There’s a bit of a big queue, and it doesn’t need to get any longer, does it?”.

With Louis Saha’s injury problems expected to call time on his United career and Angolan recruit Manucho sure to need time to adapt to the English game, Campbell may just be in luck. Danny Simpson might find the queue in his position a little harder to get to the front of – the Reds have already been linked with moves for Philipp Lahm, Daniel Alves and Micah Richards this summer, and with Wes Brown signing a new contract and Gary Neville hopefully fully fit for next season, Simpson’s chances of making a claim for the right-back berth seem slim. Not entirely non-existent though, if Danny’s interview with the East Anglian Daily Times (kindly reproduced here by Ipswich fanzine ‘Singing The Blues’) is anything to go by.

The young Salfordian has been enjoying his football with Ipswich, but believes it is unlikely he will return to Portman Road next season, even if the Suffolk side join the Reds in the Premier League. “Sir Alex has told me I’m very much part of his plans and he wants me in his squad next year. I have been told I’m going on the summer tour with them”. It will be interesting to see how the defensive ranks at Old Trafford are reshaped over the summer and just how many chances Simpson gets in pre-season – his ability to play both full-back positions might just be his trump card.
