BlueStars Day 1

Posted by nickogs20 on May 1, 2008

A United under-20 squad featuring a mixture of reserve and academy players kicked off their campaign in the 2008 BlueStars FIFA Youth Cup in Zurich with games against Swiss side Grasshoppers Zurich and Villarreal of Spain. The Reds got off to a flying start in their mid-afternoon opener against Grasshoppers, running out 4-0 winners with goals from Federico Macheda, Sam Hewson (from the penalty spot), Daniel Galbraith and Joshua King. Ron-Robert Zieler also saved a second half penalty. The team lined up as follows:

Gray – Chester – Cathcart – Eckersley
Eikrem – Cleverley – Possebon – Hewson – Galbraith

Sub: King (for Macheda), James (for Hewson), Evans (for Possebon)
Scorers: Macheda 2, Hewson (pen) 6, Galbraith 25, King 35
Booked: Macheda

United’s next game was an early evening kick-off against Villarreal, who had earlier lost heavily at the hands of Partizan Belgrade. Any thoughts of this being a straightforward fixture were misplaced however, as the Spanish outfit edged a close game 1-0. United lined up as below:

Gray – Chester – Cathcart – Eckersley
Eikrem – Cleverley – Possebon – Hewson – Galbraith

Sub: King (for Eikrem)

United have two more group games tomorrow, facing current group leaders FC Basel at 10am and then Partizan Belgrade at 11.40am. They will then play-off against the team in the same position in the other group to decide overall placings (i.e. the two group winners will face each other to decide 1st/2nd, the two runners-up for 3rd/4th and so on). FYI, games are 40 minutes long (2 x 20 minute halves) apart from the final which will be 25 minutes each way.

Further information is available at the official tournament site.
