Under 16’s on the spot at Portman Road

Some rare U16 news reaches us courtesy of Ipswich fansite www.twtd.co.uk. A United under-16 team took on their Ipswich Town counterparts at the Championship club’s Portman Road stadium this evening, eventually running out 5-3 winners on penalties after an entertaining 3-3 draw. United’s goals came from Norwegian starlet Joshua King and substitute Will Keane (2) – Keane also converted his spot-kick in the shootout, along with Ryan Tunnicliffe, Robert Brady, John Gorman and Larnell Cole, while United keeper Sam Johnstone saved the decisive fourth Ipswich penalty.
Tonight was the third time in as many years that United have taken an academy side to Suffolk (an U14 side won 4-3 last season, whilst an U15 XI lost 6-2 in 2006). Ipswich’s head of youth education Sammy Morgan is the man behind the matches, and he appears to have a strong working relationship with his United counterparts having organised several similar games in his previous role in Norwich’s youth setup.
