Under 16’s on the spot at Portman Road

Posted by nickogs20 on April 25, 2008

Some rare U16 news reaches us courtesy of Ipswich fansite www.twtd.co.uk. A United under-16 team took on their Ipswich Town counterparts at the Championship club’s Portman Road stadium this evening, eventually running out 5-3 winners on penalties after an entertaining 3-3 draw. United’s goals came from Norwegian starlet Joshua King and substitute Will Keane (2) – Keane also converted his spot-kick in the shootout, along with Ryan Tunnicliffe, Robert Brady, John Gorman and Larnell Cole, while United keeper Sam Johnstone saved the decisive fourth Ipswich penalty.

Tonight was the third time in as many years that United have taken an academy side to Suffolk (an U14 side won 4-3 last season, whilst an U15 XI lost 6-2 in 2006). Ipswich’s head of youth education Sammy Morgan is the man behind the matches, and he appears to have a strong working relationship with his United counterparts having organised several similar games in his previous role in Norwich’s youth setup.

you guys know many of the academy players, like joshua king forexample, who are not even in the under 18’s. i also wana get to know them. question, is there a player from south africa who was bought from Kaizer chiefs a few years ago – where is he now – when can we expect him in the under 18’s

it’s very hard to get info on those not in the under 18’s unfortunately. they’re all still schoolboys of course so the club are understandably keen to not make too much information about them public. at some point over the next few weeks i’ll be adding profiles on those below U18 level who we do know something about (mainly youth internationals or players we’ve acquired from other clubs).

as for the other question, can’t say i recall a player coming in from Kaizer Chiefs. will have a hunt around and see if i can turn anything up.
