Reserve Preview – Reserves looking to end league campaign on a high

Posted by nickogs20 on March 31, 2008

United’s second string travel to Newcastle this evening for their final Barclays Premier Reserve League North fixture of the season, looking to pick up where they left off in the reverse fixture last Thursday and give themselves every chance of finishing the season in a strong second place. A win tonight at St James’ Park would move the Reds level with Liverpool at the top of the table, although the scousers’ vastly superior goal difference and four games in hand rule out any chance of winning the competition.

After comfortably defeating the Barcodes in Northwich last week, this promises to be a much sterner test. Brian McClair and Jim Ryan will be missing Danny Welbeck, Chris Eagles and Mikael Silvestre from last week’s victorious starting XI after their call-ups to the first team squad for the trip to Rome, and with Tom Heaton joining those three and Ben Foster being rested, Ron-Robert Zieler looks set to get his first reserve outing in a while.

Gary Neville is included in the squad after being held back from last week’s encounter in case he was needed by the first team, and Séan Evans returns to the fold after missing recent games whilst on trial at Cheltenham Town. Rodrigo Possebon and Robert Brady have shaken off knocks picked up last Thursday and Saturday respectively and take their places in the 15-man squad that has travelled to the north-east:

United squad: Zieler, Amos; Neville, Eckersley, Cathcart, Chester, C Evans; Cleverley, Gray, Possebon, Jones, Brady, Eikrem; S Evans, Macheda.

Newcastle have already named their starting lineup – it features several players with first team experience, notably Turkish midfielder Emre. Kick-off is 7pm with the game being shown live on MUTV.
