Not for the first time this week, a former United legend and club captain has strengthened his squad with an acquisition from his former club. This time the parties involved are Steve Bruce, Fraizer Campbell and Sunderland, with the 21-year old Reds forward moving to the Black Cats for an initial fee of £3.5m.

Never has the old cliché of “it was like men playing against boys” been more appropriate. A United reserve side with an average age of just 18 (oldest player – Sam Hewson, 20 in ten days time) travelled to Humberside this evening to take on a Hull City team featuring four players in their thirties and a number of others over 20 and experience definitely told. Second-half goals from Dean Windass and Ryan France put the game beyond the young Reds, who could only respond deep into injury time with a great long-range consolation effort from Cameron Stewart.

Hull City’s £7m bid for United striker Fraizer Campbell – confirmed today by Tigers’ chairman Paul Duffen – presents Sir Alex Ferguson with something of a dilemma ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
